IMO, true talent doesn't require artificial chemical mind alteration. In fact, I doubt if anyone is more talented/creative/focused/etc when under the influence.
They just think they are.
The drugs/alcohol compensate for their artistic shortcomings.
Nothing necessarily wrong with that, though!

Yeah I think I did see that in Hustler once. Good call dude. You are brilliant!

I dont smoke anymore, not for a looong time, but for anyone that doubts it has any effect on musical appreciation you should think again, a bud
can open your mind to sonic landscapes.
the big problem is that if you have it as a
lifestyle ... IE you smoke it every day, or even every other day, this power goes away - then it is just 'normal' life. A quarter or half an ounce a day just to pass the time in the studio without any great insights, just 'normality'.
Fortunatley I was not one of those who suffered psychotic episodes, like many of my friends.
Once you have asked the way, don't keep asking .
IMHO doing a psychedelic once in a while (every 6 or 12 months) to check your head isa reasonable idea. But then only if you are able to deal with what it says!

with you on this.. doesn't matter sober or drunk or stoned, I enjoy making music. One thing I find is that I figure out stuff that I dont know when i'm stoned more often then when i'm sober. I think I just get to frustrated when i'm sober and trying to figure out something or experiment with different sounds.

I spliff and drink.... but I find the best method for bringing out the old muse called creativity is the five knuckle shuffle. Try visiting Mrs Palm and her five lovely daughters whilst recording.... it takes you in all sorts of unexpected directions.

I've always hated this line of thinking.
I don't think that getting high enhances creativity or talent, i think it enchances experience in general. And I don't think there is a difference between me thinking that pot enhances an experience and pot actually enhancing experience.
Here's the thing, drugs are tools like any other. You can use them to your benefit or you can fuck everything up with them. I certainly wouldn't be the kind of keys player i am today if it hadn't been for several summers at home spending quality time with my piano and a shitload of mushrooms. (cheaper than berklee too)
That said, I don't usually work on music when i'm high. Although when i do, I still write good stuff, because i'm skilled to begin with. And after 12 years of making electronic music, most of the tasks involved are second nature anyway. I could probably play a live show tripping my brains out on acid. I just wouldn't, because it would be a waste of acid!
whatever, if you don't do drugs, fine. But don't shit on people who do as if we're all typical braindead potheads.

as someone who is easily distracted, i have found that a wee bit o' weed helps me focus enough to get things done in a fair bit of time. i have found it takes me longer to finish songs when i am not high, simply because i get distracted easily.
that said, i don't have money to throw around on weed, so it's a fairly sporadic occurrence that i actually have any...
these days i would rather spend the dough spiffing up the studio!

I agree with you djshiva, sometimes some good smoking helps getting some tasks done, for me is rather afghani as with grass I can only trip around with my brain and laugh like a litle child.
The problem for me is that when I get high I usually tend to be willing to edit old tracks, and in the past I've done some bad bad shit with some of my tracks, but now lesson learnt, no more messing around with old tracks when stoned.

Everyone probably has their own way to get 'high'. It doesn't have to be with chemicals.
For me, it's a blast through the forest on my mountain bike with my iPod cranked. I get my best ideas that way and come back focused and psyched up.

good point...I was like that when I was younger, just cant seem to get into it these days...
SHIVA:
that's exactly how it's been for me but really recently I've kind of had a revelation and just arent feeling the need any more. The thought of it is even starting to make me feel really sick, all that smoke, the groggy feeling the next day, I've got loads of energy at the moment, so I'm hoping it will carry on like this!
