What games would he be talking about? And what hardware? And what version of Windows? Because this sounds ridiculous TBH.

Not if you think about what WINE does, really, which is, I think re-implementing the API... you just remove half of windows and only keep/load the bits that you need... and knowing Mark (and Slackware!), this'd've been on a pretty tuned system.

Unless a Universal binary for Live arrives soon, I think we'll all be in for a big disapointment come "Perfomance Test" time. That being said, good foundations have been laid-- I just hope Software Devleopers will choose build on them quickly...

From Apple:

"Rosetta is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh—it allows applications to run as nonnative binaries. Many, but not all, applications can run translated. Applications that run translated will never run as fast as they run as a native binary because the translation process itself incurs a processing cost.

How compatible your application is with Rosetta depends on the type of application it is. An application such as a word processor that has a lot of user interaction and low computational needs is quite compatible. An application that requires a moderate amount of user interaction and has some high computational needs or that uses OpenGL is most likely also quite compatible. One that has intense computing needs isn’t compatible. This includes applications that need to repeatedly compute fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), that compute complex models for 3-D modeling, or that compute ray tracing."

Sounds like Live probably won't even run under emulation... anyone know for sure?

Come to think of it, I really hope that Live doesn't work at all under Rosetta. I can see Ableton dragging their feet for months with the "well it sorta works" argument, but I can't see them completely alienating a good % of the potential NEW users who are all buying intel Macs as we speak.

By the way.... I didn't see anyone making note of the Apple marketing line "4X Faster than PowerBook G4"

There you go..... Apple finally admits just how far behind the PC market they were in terms of performance. I knew PCs were faster, but DAMN. 4 times??!!

I feel bad for anyone who shelled out $3700 for a PowerBook G4 17" with 2 gigs of RAM. That's how much they were back when I was looking at them a few months ago.

I noticed it, but I'm not a member of the church of Mac.

For years Apple had all these (highly questionable) comparisons of their G processors versus PC and how much faster they were. RISC supercomputer Altivec Dual processor knock your socks off computing power...

Now they have Intel versus G4 comparisons and they are saying how much faster the Intel is.

That's pretty funny!

:D

You could run it under Windows XP, apparently that installs & works.

It's also sad that over the last year or so, they stopped having benchmark comparisons to PCs unless it was the top of the line Dual/Quad G5s... They couldn't compare their laptops to PC laptops, they couldn't compare the minis or the iMacs... The only comparison they ended up being able to do were comparisons to previous macs... :)

Everyone has a slogan here or there. Different ways of measuring speed. its all crap. I wont defend apple at all, but i will say the most important tests are the ones that are run on sites like this one. This is the real life test of real software we all use. The answers there speak for themselves.

Also, no one seemed to mention that you CAN get a 7200rpm HD on the MacBook Pro. SO, no more bitching about 5400 from you PC guys.

It seems lately a lot of PC people are bitching far more than the mac people are gloating. If anything, the mac heads are just rejoycing among themselves at Apples continuing success and growth. If you go to any Mac/osx forum you'll see that "mac heads" are plenty able to give Apple a hard time when its deserved.

Lets try to be objective about this please. There are obviously plenty of extremely powerfull PCs and PC laptops available already. But that is not entirely the point.

I like to think Im still relatively objective, having only been using a mac for around 6 months. I miss my PC for some things, but Im glad I made the change.

I couldnt agree more. Obviously a lot of DJ types will adore the new "MacBook Pro", but I think many who use Ableton at the heart of their DAW [wether they gig or not] will be taking a serious look at the new imacs.

Personally Im gonna try hang tight, but I suspect it wont be long before I cant resist the allure of the 20" imac any longer.

Oh.. and one more thing.. I think the new imacs look to be offering the best value for money Ive ever seen from an Apple product.
