Is anyone not doing ambient/electronica/dance/techno here?
Given what you're saying about house already, I don't think there's any artist or DJ that I can recommend that you'll like. There's some good stuff coming out of Australia, but since you've already heard it and didn't like it, not much I can recommend. However, for good deep house, I suggest most anything from the Hooj label (even stuff a few years old), and anything touched by Harry Lemmon (Lemmon 8 ) is just fabulous. But like you said, you might need some drugs to truly enjoy it.forgie wrote: Can you give me some artists/DJs to listen to?
I think I'll take your advice on the buying local thing. The price on Fireboxes dropped to $300 in the US, but the AU price of $650 is still anchored on the old US price of $500... hopefully soon enough the price drop will come through here, and I'll be able to get one for more like $500 (I understand that the price drop also included a margin drop, so I can't expect a linear price drop).
.... never underestimate the ability of party drugs to make mundane music sound interesting or moving.
Regarding buying internationally, I think sticking to local and waiting for a price drop is you best bet. Otherwise, I'd say that you can send money to a friend you trust and have him buy it and ship it to you, but again, I often opt for paying a bit more for peace of mind.
yeah, I record some of my bands and solo stuff in Live, lots of "real" instruments--basses, guitars, drums, percussion, vocals...
check some of my bands on my website, one's recorded with Live are Quandry, Mixed Bar, and Rule of Thump. Live kicks ass.

plus, all of the music there (20+ tracks) was created in the last 3 months.
seriously bitchin' female vox, 'real' instruments, 'real' songs (ie 'pop' songs as opposed to electronica (which i do love dearly)).
live is some seriously powerful shit. i used to spend 40-100 hours mixing each track, now that i've adapted my workflow to live, our productivity is unbelievable. some weeks we come up with 3 new songs, usually we get at least one 'radio-ready' track a week.
we do inhabit the sneaker pimps/tricky/massive attack/portishead neighborhood, there are some synths, but there is also banjo, acoustic guitar, and the aforementioned killer female vox, looped, layered, luscious.
we're slated to appear on npr's open mic podcast soon, going to start playing gigs next month with two live pc's running synced via midi.
live! live! live! i love this software.

I use just about any instrument I can get my hands on to make music.
I love the organic sounds of different instruments as much as I enjoy making trippy sounds on my synths and computer. I make dance music with them too.
My favorite artists use a mix of sounds both synthesized and natural. I think it is a great combo.
My thing is to bring live elements to dance music. Even drums alone bring it to a different level. [/quote]

I'm using it for everything: synths, vocals, guitar/bass (both direct and mic), etc. I'm loving my setup and have recorded one acoustic project (vocal and acoustic guitar) that sounds quite pristine if I do say so myself. Live is far more than just a electronic music machine. The editing features alone work so well, I hardly want to use anything else.
I'm running a presonus firepod (8 ins with pres) and an aphex 207 with digi outs for stereo tube love giving me 10 ins for recording just about anything I need to. Contrary to popular belief, live (and i'm still on live 4) records and reproduces acoustic music quite well. Only the most experienced veteran engineers are going to notice any difference between lives rendering and say, protools when the project is finished, assuming it was mastered well enough.
