thats what im thinking so I dont really see this as a mega revelation. I thought this was going to be a foregone conclusion.
Here's what I reckon could happen... the reason Macs are less hassle for technophobic musos is because there is less variation in hardware and so they tend to be easier to set up, troubleshoot and have historically been more stable because of this lack of hardware variation ...

.. so buying a Mac and running Windows on it should guarantee a very stable (due to the limited hardware config) setup. All of Window's problems come from trying to support too many configurations.

People will buy these simply for the same reason they buy dells... it offers some level of stability. Whole companies buy only Dells for example to maintain consistency.

This is a pretty big deal for sure.. I'm now going to try to get my boss to get me a Mac for my laptop machine - and I'll stick OS X on it - this is ace!

thats true, but there are also areas where windows itself is really, really crap that you just know how to fix if you are adept, but most users dont.

as an example I was at a friends house over the weekend and saw his computer was a disaster zone so started removing the porn-dialers, trojans, etc. While downloading FF for him about 10 windows messenger spam boxes popped up. "your computer has a trojan, click OK to fix" . He had been clicking 'OK' on these things.

As a typical user he had no idea how to disable windows messenger and stop this, nor should he.

Windows is terrible as it arrives on disk and unfortunately for most users without technical knowledge it stays that way. It's easy to forget that.

This guy has a 56k modem, it took 20 mins to download FF, god knows how long service pack 2 would take.

the insanely high price for a macbook pro. you can buy 2 (two) dual core pc notebooks for the price of 1 (one) macbook pro. And if you need osx that bad, just install it on one of the pc notebooks... lol it's easy! Although if the macbook pro was $1399'ish I'd definitely buy one. But $2000 for a base model is just WAY to high.
Installing OSX on non-macs is a joke. Just cause people can do it, doesnt mean it works worth a shit. I cant even believe people still bring this up on audio forums of all places. Some of the most software intensive programs out there. OSX on a dell is not in any way usable. Unless you are talking about making a few tracks in reason.

Definitley put this in the "Reasons to buy a Macbook now" column...

Unfortunately, the 64 bit chipset will be out near the end of the year... what to do.

There are SO many good PC-only VSTs that I have wanted to use (Glitch)

but now I wonder: Will this relevation put a freeze on the apps/plug ins that all the Windows-only companies were going to convert? Now it could easily go, "Just buy Windows and use our product..."

There's a guy I work with setting Bootcamp on his Macbook currently... I understand it wouldn't install as easily as he wanted, so he had to wipe the HD, re-install OS X and then install Bootcamp to get it to work.

huzzah!

Huh? Why shouldn't running OSX on a Dell work exactly as well as running Windows on a MacTel? Both are standard PCs.

apple know exactly how their hardware functions, and are doing this dual booting thing legitimately. Putting osx on a dell is an under-the-counter kind of thing, probably illegal in some way, and neither microsoft nor apple is doing it for you

osx doesn't include drivers for all the hardware the dells have..

osx is custom written for apple hardware...

get it?

'Custom written for Apple hardware'? Bollocks. There isn't a transistor in a MacTel that you can't find in another PC. It's all stock components. It's all about a few drivers.

And elves of course. Apple uses a different breed of elves.

perhaps but i can tell you that it ran like a pig on my p4 2.8
and it didn't see the built in audio or wireless.

it did see the firewire and usb, and the hard drives..
but not my dvd burner.

also the m-audio beta drivers were broken completely on the
p4 2.8 .. i can only assume they only partially broken on
a real mac.

sure you can go buy a nasty cheap laptop for that price. again this isn't just about speed, or the processor. i dont understand why some of you think this way.

its like going to buy a car just for the engine

anyways, new ibooks should be coming shortly at those price points you have mentioned.

spec for spec that is incorrect. If you spec a PC notebook to exactly the same as a macbook pro it has been shown to be very close indeed. I have seen this done on several sites. Of course you may not want or need the "extras" or higher specs so yes u can save BUT what you suggest is illegal installing OSX on a PC and we all know that

Why is this something people are excited about?

Why would you run windows on a mac?

Isn't the reason u pay so much for a mac because you want OSX?

If you want to run XP, wouldn't you just build a kickass computer with
cheaper off the shelf components that are easy to replace?

i got quite a few vsts and graphics apps that will work only on winxp, tho they may have updates i dont have the cash to pay for them as im saving for other things .....so being able to utilize the power of my imactel to run windows software (3d studio max) is something to be excited about, its also sweet to know that when the quad mactels come out I can safely assume I can run any available software for either windows or osx on the one sweet-as-a-chestnut machine. thats a good thing.

Yellow, personally i need nothing from windows. there is nothing i need that i cant run on OSX. so chances are if my job in the future doesn't require me to run windows i'll prob never need to.

However this isn't the case for a lot of people. a lot of businesses and jobs require windows only apps. some people in here enjoy some exclusive windows applications.

the benefits of having both will prob mean a lot for people

think about it you need something for windows, multiple programs, yet you dont want to run windows online cuz of viruses....

now you have osx for online, music, whatever else

and you have windows there incase you need to use it for a program.

I'd love to run windows on a mac; I use os x for everything, but need a PC to run SMAART LIVE and Soundvision...
