well you'll never finish building a modular if you spell like thatleonard wrote:it's all good until something goes wrong.Angstrom wrote:If you are any use at all with a soldering iron you could get a kit.
something like the

for around $200
look here for the Soundlab kit
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/
or if you feel confident in future finances ... buy a modular synth module-by-module
http://www.synthesizers.com/system-entry1.html
althought thats $120 a month for 12 months so it may be out of your price range.
and you spend hours upon hours trying to figure out why the fuck that piece of shit aint making the sound that's posted on the website. all the bits are in place, all the fuckin' polarity's right there, but the damn fuckin' thing aint doin what the fuck it's sposeder.
Ye old analog synth - the real thing
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.
One of my top choices for a real deal Analog synth would be the Korg MS20 what great sounding and compact Semi-Modular synth love the modulation and I've only played the Soft version which is amazing one of the best sounding softsynths I own (Reaktor 5, Gforce synths, Reason 3, Fabfilter)
I've been eyeing a few on Ebay as well as the Roland SH101. What about the SH7 the green machine?
So I would love to have a TB303 and have that sucker modifed to hell and back, but I think the FutureRetro Revolution will do the trick what cool concept.

Hehe, they are realy going for that Arp lookrtopia wrote:I encourage everyone here to at least consider going modular if they decide not to go the kit route (I'm a eurorack bigot so I'll stop here).
For a "standalone complete system" I say "check out the macbeth M5"
(it grabs the Voyager by the hair and pisses in it's mouth)

I'm currently saving up for a Doepher A-100 Basic-2 system (has the midi extra) which I will continue to build on, been wanting a modular all my life, oh the waiting time is horrible

Check the module list, has sound samples, droool.

The Andromeda's mod matrix only works at 100Hz, making audio-rate modulations impossible (apart from the preset ones- filter FM etc). A modular without audio-rate modulation isn't half as fun!sweetjesus wrote:why would you go modular when there's Andromeda A6..

Well because it's not a modular with all the things possible on a modular, looking at the specs it doesnt look to me like I can patch anything into whatever I'd like no matter it it's the right thing to do.sweetjesus wrote:why would you go modular when there's Andromeda A6..
With a modular I can also keep adding features by buying new modules that can then be patched to anything else, no limits.

ehh, i want both.sweetjesus wrote:why would you go modular when there's Andromeda A6..
y'know, my favorite analog synth sounds are the super animated textures, stuff that has nothing to do with keyboard performance. That's where i feel modular stuff really has an advantage. I'd love something like the andromeda for more note oriented stuff, after i own a modular.
but hey, as you know, i agree with you and ishimaru for voting the sh-101 as a great first analog synth. It's cheap (i'd say $450 is about average), can get a great range of sounds considering how simple it is, and has a great interface. And yeah, having midi to cv makes a huge difference. You get to record your key performance as midi so you can double hand the controls for expression. But it is only monophonic if that's an issue.
