what about representing that as a mathmatical formula, like DJ(2)D ...or something.

I agree completely with MBreqs. I released a few tracks using my real name last year and wasn't too happy that people could google for my name and find out about me.

I interviewed a guy in work two weeks ago who asked me if I was the same guy who releases techno music .. he'd googled for me and found links to tracks.

So I now use a "title" ...

I just like to see quality musicians/DJs/actors/whatever proud enough to use their own names without the insecurity and need to hide behind an alias.

Tell that to a John Smith or Bill Edwards
or to john edwards.. what a douche bag

I argee....although there's little chance I'll make it onto a giant poster with Headline-act......blahblah.....I at least live in the real world.

Anyway.....my best advice, Get a friend(a good friend) to decide your name........2 reasons,

1....if it's crap you can blame someone else
2....Less chance of you seeming omnipotent/up-your own arse etc.

A mates wife decided mine for a Hardhouse night where I had my first gig....originally it was Corben Dallas (5th Element).....I shortened it just for a laugh when I did a couple of CD's and my mates jumped on it.

Everybody knows me as dallas!.....few people know my real name.

Anyway.....

dallas!

While I respect Hammy's opinon, I prefer people who would rather be creative and invent something new - name included - rather than using their normal name.

I can't believe I just admitted two of those facts (the law degree, and that such a pathetically stupid moniker popped into my head).
:D :D :D

Thanks for sharing that, Dave.

It fine if you have a cool real name, but for a lot of people, including myself... we don't... that's why made up names are better.

another good reason for not using your birthname - you're 'stage' name can hint at or sum up the vibe of your music/set. Not to mention you could have a handful of monikers for different projects/types of sound ....

Alot of the top techno and house dj's use their real names - some their whole name others jsut go by

DJ DAN <---- How simple but he's like one of the best funky house dj's on the planet and then it all starts to make sense - it's easy to remember and it kind of works

DJ DAN

or Donald Glaude <---- his real name

Carl Cox, Dave Clarke, Ben Sims, Chris Liebing, etc etc

Your name is probably the best bet you've got - if your music is off the hook you could be DJ PILLOW BITER and still sell out the club and go home with Paris or Nikki

The name is what it is - it's your music that speaks for you :)
