Ok - this has been hysterical. Funniest thread I've read in ages. And the funniest part is, I'm not sure anyone was trying to be funny....

OK Ill.

See the little buttons lined up vertically on the left hand side of your screen. The bottom three are your "Ableton Browser" buttons. They basically work like your osx or windows folders. You can navigate around your hard drive in there.

Don't bother with mp3 format unless you have lots of files and need the hard disk room. Ableton just converts mp3s to wav (or AiFF on mac?) anyway, so not much point.

Once you have converted your "instrumental" - by which I assume you mean a sample loop or song in an audio format - to wav format, find where it is saved in one of the above mentioned Ableton Browser windows. Then click your mouse on it, hold down the button and drag the little sucker to an Audio Track.

Instrumental imported.

Praise be to yahweh, jehovah, god, jesus, buddha, the giant spaghetti monster or whatever other deity you choose.

Next step: read the manual cover to cover three times. Then apply all you have learned. You'll be writing rocking beats to accompany your hymns in no time.

Ill, sorry the ableton forum is a bit weird, you have to know the people in here to get their sense of humor. And yes, they are VERY serious about their religion. Most of them believe in astrology - as that is the official Ableton religion...

Now seriously. They're all messing with you, here's the real explanation. Ok, on your screen you have a big start button somewhere, probably on your lower left part of the screen. This is your ableton navigator. But since your problem is obviously on a hardware level, we will need to put ableton to sleep first, so we can surgically transform the wma into a mp3 (that goes on inside your hard drive - which is INSIDE your computer, not on your screen). Ok so first click your ableton navigator ("start") now click shutdown, and then holding your shift-key down press "hibernate". Alrighty then, this will put ableton to sleep. Now having it quietly dozing you can go to work, don't worry it won't feel a thing.

Your main problem is that SATA nor IDE drives support the mp3 format, but there's a work around. You have to physically move the cable of your hard drive to the other (more different) port on your motherboard. Oh, I forgot to say you should now have opened up your computer, remember to leave the power on, we need to test it once in a while when we're doing the surgical transformation. Ok so basically just move the cable of your hard drive to the slot on the motherboard that is either double its size, or half its size. Having done that - hold it down there physically (just press your palm against the motherboard over where the cable is) - and press the power on button.

Now you have as long as you can physically hold it there, so I'd suggest you quickly find your wma file (which should now be named mp3) copy it to a laserdisc, and store the laserdisc somewhere safe.

This worked for me...
