MSRP of a boxed Ableton 6 with Sampler and Operator is $950 (unless I have this wrong).
And Logic still has a lot more plug ins and instruments included. Not complaining mind you (I don't use Logic anyway), just that my first thought when seeing the new prices was how expensive Live has become.
That kinds of sticks in my craw. Compare what you get in Logic for that price to what you get in Live 6 for the same price and it's really absurd.
Well, honestly Logic is an absurdly good deal, people can bitch and moan, but Apple undercut
EVERYBODY with that package.
I think it would be cool if Ableton was at least looking to give as good a deal though! I think Apple don't make much money off of Logic though, it's all about selling computers.
One thing though that people aren't thinking about is that every time a new plug in has been announced, there has been an introductory price.
Also, I'm sure package deals will be announced.........
Buy upgrade to 6 boxed with Operator and Sampler for XXX amount of money etc...
-X$ if you own Operator already etc.
I Think Ableton would be doing themselves a disservice not to take a hint from NI's Komplete bundle, and the cash cow that's been for NI.

Wow. I have been reading this forum all day at work-something I have never done before. I got most of the excitement out of my system by reading others post the same things (both sides) that I was thinking. The price breakdown/comparison to Logic 7 is very interesting to me. What comes down to though, is ableton deserves the right to make money on their hard work, rather than just doing charity work.
Apple can undercut all it wants. However small it is compared to microsoft, it is still a scary monster. Live has done something specifically different here. They have officially become peddlers.
A lot of us see these new features as bug-fixes. Junkies always want more.
Initially I would not say that the Abe's were on the darkside of the force. The simply devloped a product that satisfied a serious need. That was good. Now, however, they have strategically created an artificial need, ie: Sampler.
Given the option of marketing the Movie feature or the Sampler as an EXTRA, Sampler makes a lot more sense. Sampler does seem to be very much it's own unique entity. The thing is, as Henke has identified in past interviews, the compulsion to make electronic music is often paired with an irrational addiction. I will now drop the peddler metaphor, however, because in all reality, this is just by-the-textbook marketing. The Sampler so perfectly integrates into the continuity of the Ableton work environment, that psychologically we are compelled to intellectually expand our interaction with the environment (ie: piss on the tree.)
Well. judging by my post count, you better believe I'm gonna piss on this tree! Live is doing all sorts of things that I single-handedly will never get max to be able to do. And, while I pity the fact that I am going to drop even more cash after not publishing my first max patch yet, it seems that in some ways the abes have intuitively read my mind.
The only way any of us are going to be free of the lure of such sexy beasts as the Sampler, and their wonderful world is by clearly defining what their goals as an individual are, and learning how to most independently achieve them.
In this case I can justify the aquisition of Sampler because it looks like it could eat Logic's Sculpture Kraggen-style. That and yes, we are all very familiar with Live's work flow.
Face it- If we want it, it is worth the money. We know the abes are at the top of the game, and we know that they have been REALLY quiet for a long time. This sh%t is gonna be chronic, and i will be released right around the time that there will be reliable computers to represent it on! No more of this "I'm on OSX so I can only get 3 instances of reverb."
It's gonna be expensive, but with dual cores, and the omnipotent powers with which we will receive, between our new computers, new features, and this exciting sound-desgn tool- it will only be a question of each of our own character and foci, if the cost is worth it.
This is why I go to school and work, both full-time. Because I like having what I decide I need. So do ableton. That's why I have a feeling they have decided to shape the future again. Damn I love 'em.

did you just say you don't think apple makes much money off of logic?
seriously? when you sell a box with a cd in it for $1000 you don't think there is a profit in that?
oh you're right there are only like 2 logic users out there..... wait..... what?

I'm sure Sampler is fantastic, I'm sure it's all innovative and lovely.
but so that you can see why I am not all fizzy with emotion over it
man, i think you'd have a reason to be annoyed if ableton had made this upgrade something like 200/250€, and had included the Sampler in it.
but they let us the choice of buying or not, or even later.
what you have now is a yearly upgrade for 99€, which includes great new features, which are in my opinion totally worth it.
i think last year's upgrade was 150€, right?
so this year it's cheaper, why complaining?
some people would rather have seen Ableton work on the core host rather than spend what was likely a lot of time on a sampler which fairly duplicates software many people have already
and it is costly $300 with the sound library
Live 6 looks dandy. Since I just bought Kontakt like 6 months ago it is just a tad frustrating to see Ableton come out with something which duplicates what I already paid $350 for.
Not mad at Ableton but another $300 is more than I want to pay. They have to offer some cheaper special or crossgrade price for owners of other samplers to entice people to purchase

It would be nice if people who bought operator or continually purchase boxed upgrades. hoodies, etc could get a discount...

Personally I really don't care that much about the cost. I've already spent a lot more than that on other gear. The downer for me is that a lot of things I was *really* hoping to see get some attention in Live 6 are now going to have to wait at least another year and the stuff that is new is mostly redundant alongside stuff I already have.

I think its pretty harsh since I just bought Live 5 last Friday, and now if I had waited until today to unlock it I would get 6 for free. Doesn't make sense to me after I just shelled out a shit load of cash for it.
Edit: especially since I can't get Live 5 to start My Hardware sequencer on beat one, and it starts all out of sync (which never happens with my other software).

My Understanding was/is that the boxed version is $219 USD with the Instruments included as part of the bundle or am I reading the information incorrectly ?
Seems like a good deal at that price IMHO.

Well, as for the whole
sampler+operator+live 6 = alot of money
It's fair to say thet the sampler isn't part of live 6. So when you upgrade to live 7 you'll still retain the sampler, and operator if you've bought that. So it's a one-off.
I don't really want the sound library at all.
The live 5 -> live 6 upgrade is fairly priced. And really, didn't you do fine without the sampler and the sound library?

hehe its kind of amusing.
hey guys, the sampler isnt just a sampler, it's a whole mangling machine... it's not like any sampler i've ever used. i'd seriously reserve judgement until the beta comes out for you guys.
furthermore, theres a component in the sampler which is so good some of us have requested abes to consider it as a standalone feature for l7.
