1. Why the hell would you go to a tiesto event if you are not hardcore into trance/house/dance music? I don't go to KISS concerts and for good reason.

I'm glad that there are young people there, its nice to see young people get into dance music because traditionally young people, atleast in the US, have generalized it all the be techno and just discount it as art, and It's alot better than them going to a death metal concert and getting smashed in a mosh pit, asuming that people at the dance event steer away from the stigma drugs. 3. The music he plays and produces may not be your cup of tea, but that does not mean it's made for people under 18. My dad sure hates dance music because of the repeditive nature but I mailed him ASOT 2006 w/ Armin van Buuren, and he enjoyed it very much. To each his own I say. I don't like country but do I say its only for rednecks?

4. Tiesto is not very good by my standards. He has about maybe 3 tracks I really like. I tend to like Armin van Buuren "I mean the productions he does, he is a great DJ but I usually only pay attention to the production one does, because anyone can DJ. It takes skill to make your own tracks and fit them seemlessly into a mix.

BTW I am not just big into trance music, but I have this deep fasination with Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. They don't do traditional music and they do it very well. If I was not doing trance/prog music, I would be doing that music. Breakcore all the way.

ah yeah the actual thread. i drifted away there.

many of the already mentioned:

it's hard to say, very succsessful over the years and / or influential have been definetely depeche mode, kraftwerk, J.M. jarre, chemicals, underworld, bjoerk, moby, aphex twin, coldcut, squerepusher, hawtin, jeff mills, etc, etc. the list could be long. not that i like all of them, but they do have their place in the world of electronic music.

and actually one that caught my attention lately the most and has incredible fresh non recipe a or b formular structures / arrangements, is a yet rather unknown artist.

Although I'd say Underworld is good, Tiesto, Oakenfold, BT (for the most part, some tracks off of ESCM and IMA were brilliant) is IMHO utter shite.

I'd really recommend downloading a program like Rhapsody, it's $10 or so a month but when you find something you like, it recommends 5-10 artists for you to check out and stuff like that. It's a great way to quickly and conveniently expose yourself to new tunes.

yup. Someone mentioned Richie Hawtin asked 20.000 to play a gig... well I don't think people like Dr.Dre would get out of bed for that kind of money....

do i missunderstand you, or do you compare hawtin with Dr. Dre?

Yes. I am actually comparing the two.

The main jumping point is that since there's been no further definition of "electronic music" other than "not singer/songwriter", then anything goes.

...And since they both produce electronic music - Hawtin in the minimal techno subgenre, Dre in the hip-hop subgenre - then I would go with Dre.

Now, if anyone wants to start a discussion within a field with some better definition I'm all for it as well.

just wondering, cause i personally think that Dr. Dre is more worth his money, cause he entertains, hawtin doesn't. playing with a filter all night long and charging 20.000 euros compared to the entertaining value of Dr. Dre and the all over stuff / many artists he produced.

hardly anyone outside the elctronic scene knows hawtin, of cause we do, but we are into electronica. Dr. Dre do know people even if they do not listen to any electronica nor Rap / hip hop. he is by far more global. and therefore is able to accsess more people. just an example, this is a very small country i am living in right now, if you put up posters saying Dr. Dre is in town, everyone would talk about him, cause they do know / have heard his name, if you say hawtin is in town, about 5000 to maybee 15.000 people would talk about him. and i think that ist is pretty much everywhere like that. (in percentage)

but that is shurely just my humble opinion.

Doctor Dre is a way more massive draw than any electronic act - easy

and to be honest I'd go see Dr. Dre and Snoop before I went to any of the above

but Dre may never have to perform ever again in his life because his albums and production sell millions as opposed to Hawtin who I highly doubt has ever sold over 50K plus albums and most likely depends on his high profile touring schedule to exist

and I bet Dre's show would kill Hawtin's show deck, efx and 909 - please Dre. would bring the whole goddamn stadium sound system, some surprise acts and hella probably one hell of a good time

Dre might be mainstream - but he was one of the founding fathers of West Coast rap - my dad took me to see NWA at the Paramount when I was 12 - however I'm not going ot reutrn the favor and take him tosee hawtin (laughs kinda at the thought)

and yes, they both use electronic instruments, MPC's and samplers to make music but Dre I bet more than Hawtin incorporates real live instrumentation - like real guitar, bass, singers and the whole lot

where's Richie hawtin just kicks a can down the street and hits record - puts it on a album and the uber 80's minimal crowd calls him a genius <--- ok that's mean but it's kind a true
