a lot of heads who go out pay a lot of attention to the performer (most of us would) and if the performer isn't giving the energy back to the people it gets kind of boring and people will leave the dance floor

Even if you're using Ableton to get your point across and call it djing - you've got to be someone what entertaining to watch - which means looking like you're doing something other than staring at a laptop

even vid's I see of Sasha's djing with Ableton he's doing all kinds of shit (what I don't know)

but you have to be somewhat exciting to watch

That's why I don't see myself using Ableton as a DJ tool, becasue I don't want to look at the computer when I'm djing, I want a physical medium I can look at, even if the physical medium is controlling a digital file "like Torq"

If you want to produce ,get ableton. If you want to "DJ," then get something like Torq.

Now Torq is really dope - it's got so much potential with the Sampler and looping

I can see it developing into a full DJ DAW

perhaps being able to use your favorite VSTI - or running long sequences along side your records

Torq is phat - now I just need a gig (DOH!)

Yes they did. I'm not a DJ but you can't even select a whole scene remotely anymore ! You could in Live 5 and now you have to use your mouse !! Great improvement. Especially "live". Fantastic, thanks Ableton.

It is there, go to Preferences > Record/Warp/Launch > Select on Launch

WTF, do people not examine the software when they get it. I spent a whole day just looking at the Prefs and all to see whats new and where it is.

-BTW, I would like to say that the things that everyone is bitching about is for the most part not available on real turntables. You want to have notes in your markers?? WTF, learn your tracks that you play. When I only used vinyl i had to memorize by ear what is happening on a tune, and what sound cues would let me know what is going to happen next. i mean come on. Now i can just click on a tune and see where its at by looking at the waveform.

-Looking at 2 tracks at once?? On vinyl you can only look at one record at a time and even then, depending on what kind of music, you couldn't even tell if a breakdown was coming by looking at the grooves. USE YOUR EARS. Live is so easy to DJ with its insane.

-Pitch control? There is no need, the tracks all stay in time with each other because they are warped ! ! Locking two tracks together is the biggest drag in mixing. I can't count the # of times that I have been at a club and mixed on a beat up 15 year pair of MKII's that WILL NOT KEEP A STEADY PITCH! Who wants to be riding the pitch the whole way through the mix? I would much rather be playing with the EQ etc.. The only time one might need to use this kind of control is when mixing from vinyl to mp3. This can be done by fallowing the tutorial on the Ableton DJ wiki for "turntable like" tempo control.

-Crossfader curves? I don't use the crossfader, i use the channel fader. Think of it like an old Uri dj mixer. I mean, that is the mixer that DJing got started on. No eq either. Now you can have 2 different types of EQ's and a multi mode filter.  I'm sure there is atleast one Crossfader curve preset that suites you. Go right click on the crossfader and choose away.

-Divide your tracks up into chunks and loops. NEVER RUN OUT OF TRACK ! ! ! When could you easily do that with turntables? NEVER!

Live is 100x the dj software than anything out there. What other program lets me pretend I'm Ritchie Hawtin on his famous Decks Fx and 909 tour? LOL

Remote selection of a scene is done by clicking on Midi or Key learn and looking under the master track stop all clips button there should be an up and down arrrow and a box with a number in it. Click on the box with the number and assign a knob to it. Use the knob to scroll through scenes and it will highlite a whole scene as you move the knob. Then you can use a Key mapping and set the little play button to the left of that to launch the scene you selected. Is that what your looking for?

I agree with the benefit to djs above btw.

One thing though, with vinyl you can look at both vinyls for visual cues to whats happening next. I don't ding Live to be that restrictive though as the F12 button can get me to the waveform view and i can select channels with the keyboard too.

Same here - strictly mix up and down unless I'm double beating, cutting or scratching the beat in

but really I didn't commit to up and down mixing until the crossfader on my RANE broke - I've been to lazy to ask my boy at Platinum if they have any for my MOJO or call my buy up and RANE - I'm content though

LIVE is bomb - but keep an eye on Torq...If they can get their 16 cell sampler to launch on the beat at the proper tempo, maybe a midi cell for a VSTI

I can see it - beatmatching (still being able to use my decks - not pre warped tracks), loops, native and 3rd party VST's and the ability to play soft synths <-- that would do it for me...I'm just saying ;)

In Live 6 you can assign midi commands to switch the Clip view to whatever clip is playing in each track. Another nice new feature.

Though I agree that dual waveform view would be useful. Yeah, you don't have it on old school decks, but it's due to the new ways I can DJ in Live that I want it

Me too (I mean I've been doing it for 13 years) but sometimes it's a little akin to plate spinning and not really where the skill lies in DJing. It's nice to be freed from it to concentrate on other stuff.
