the MD has become a staple here over the past 9 months. Used to have a Jomox too but that didn't cut it the way the elektrons do. but you MUST program the hell out of it. Once you can handle that, then get a monomachine and get ready to spend hours hunched over it to get a good pad/lead/bass - in the end it's worth it though. the elektrons have such a unique sound.

I still think that Novation DrumStations are the best hardware drum machine for the money.
You can get one used on eBay for less than $200 and it can recreate (to a large degree) the sounds of the 808 and the 909, better than a JoMoX and cheaper too.
Seriously, if you guys want some good sounds, pick one up. They are cheap and sound awesome.
Oh yeah, and they're all tuneable. KNOBSSSSS

Hey all – coming into this one late but want to put in a vote for the 999. Im a huge Jomox fan, starting originally with a xBase but wanted more of the Jomox sound so sold and went for the Airbase which I still have. Now considering a 999 but wont be until the new year if ever.
But either way you can’t really go wrong with this choice. The MD is a great machine and I would also love one. The only thing that puts a 999 slightly in front of a MD for me is the MD’s kick and snare – Im really not very convinced on this part of the MD as I am yet to hear any MD audio where the kick/snare have sounded good (to me). But other than that, a great quirky machine.
Let us know that you do
PS: Don’t forget the new xBase ROM upgrade that also give 999 style sample uploads.. http://beam.to/xrom
The xBase does not have any toms, that is the Airbase. Also the Airbase toms are analogue, not samples. But regarding the samples, I love the Jomox samples. Based on the 909 circuitry you get lovely 6 bit samples plus dedicated VCA so they snap like no bodies business and you get a ton of control over them. On the Airbase the filter section also gets a dedicated analogue VCF. On the 999 things get very sexy as you have the ability to upload your own samples into the 6bit ROMs.thelike5 wrote:The new Jomox Xbase999 is also about $500-600 more. Something to consider. I haven't heard it in person but I have spent loads of time on the xbase09 and I loved it. THAT drum machine was an analog bass drum, and an analog snare. Otherwise it was cheapo Boss drum samples for the claps, high hats, toms, etc.

Wow didnt know any of that. Thanks for the info
I thought that everything else then kick are not of much use so i swaped 09 for M base but i use rather often the material that I recorded while having 09 for few days. Those "samples" are increadibly musical and I also miss hands on while tweaking the BD. There is nothing chepo about Jomox if you have musicians ears.I would love to find Jazbase sometime otherwise might get 09 again or Airbase and sequence it with MPC. however sequencing with Jomox is also very interesting and distinct.
I find those praises of MD a bit exagerated, would advice anyone to hear, test it before buying. It is not everyones taste, the basic Osc does not impress me and I find the MD sound unpleasant and obnoxious, too bad since I love everything else yet wouldnt buy a box thats sound I actually hate. However I am aware that what I hate is exactly what some other people adore, the music world has place for everything.
999 seems overpriced, getting Airbase and MD for the same money could be the most flexible solution.

thanks for the heads up on the XROM punkdisco, I'm really curious how it sounds. My friend uses an 09...
as for the MD kick, well - I use an mbase. BUT....I assume we all have an outboard Mixer ? ....all you have to do, to get a really lush bassey kick out of the MD, is first of all get it nice on the MD itself, and then EQ it on your mixer....hey presto, a fat-ass kick.
I often wonder if the people who criticise the MD havent had the opportunity to listen to one thats being played, and eq'd, through an outboard mixer. Four seperate outputs (naturally enough) ...so you have your individual channels on the mixer for EQing and beefing up/heating up sounds.
I dont even know what its like to run my MD direct into my ad/das ....I've always used it run through a mixer.
beyond the sound of the MD, the sequencer is truely excellent.
