my dell inspiron8100 had the same issues...
i did the following. bought a ground remover plug from radio shack, and i was told that this 100% does not interfere or endanger anything.
2. i updated the bios and all drivers on
www.dell.com just search for the 8100 and youll find it. the bios update was even updated as recently as last couple of days or weeks, not sure.
it solved all my complaints, now i am extremely happy with my dell laptop.
1ghz p3, with 256mb ram, 8x cdrw, and rme cardbus multiface.

ACK! I'm not sure how the Rat Shack loop isolator functions, but I'd be weary of anything that magically makes electrical problems go away.
I found a great document on google, everyone with audio problems and a laptop should really
read this very lengthy and wordy documentregarding ground loop problems.

My sony laptop runs Live perfectly...actually better than my desktop..because my desktop gives me that weird flickering bug.
vaio specs:
512ddr ram, raedon-allinwonder 32meg 3dcard, p4 1.6, 40gig, 17.1 viewable(1600x1200)
the big view helps alot at high resolution, other than that..the only thing its lacking that my desktop offers is fully balanced audio output(which alot of ppl with laptops skip over)

I bought a dell for some shows in europe
I went with the inspiron 4150
p4m 1.6ghz
512mb DDR ram
40 gig 5400 RPM dma 100 high perf hard drive
ect.
$1400 and change, several months ago
works like a charm. no problems. noise problems disappeared after a bios update. I didnt think that was fixable via bios update, but yay for me
