The main feature missing from Live is real time scratching. Which I think will hopefully come. You can use the mouse to drag the playback cursor to do scrath-like effects but it isn't the same. That's the only drawback to Live compared to viynl Djing. I think there are some way to achieve this, but a simple solutions has yet to appear if you ask me.
We need a little cheap midi controller to use with live that will have a crossfader and 2 turntable devices for scratching, when we get this say goodbye to turntables.

Yo Luddites!
this all makes me think of that McLuhan Quote, 'In the name of "progress" our official culture is striving to force the new media to do the work of the old.'
Why force something as beautifully ambiguous as Live into so tight a mould as the traditional DJ? why impose limits to make it more like something developed 20 years ago (Flash) 60 years ago (Cage) or 100 years ago (Edison)?? Why should Ableton pander to a bunch of soon to be outmoded record players??? (
)
lol peeps i's been a raver all my adult life and i love a lot of DJs but u need to open yr minds a little more. look more objectively at what you do and why you do it and you will realise how fucking great live could be for you if you forgot about those mechanical wheels
"wah wah wah vinyl is so reeeaalll, i love pops and crackles and warping [not the fun kind] and jumping and skipping, its so waarrrm, and my box is so heeaavvyy, and scratching is so expressive (bad meaning bad meaning bad meaning something new? nah. ) and all the girls love it cos its been around long enough to get famous"

Yep, somehow integrating Ms. Pinky into ableton would be the best solution. Some could use it as a "standart" midi controler for any available parameter in live, others who want to dj/scratch with live and still like to have something "real" in their hands can use it to scratch, trigger and nudge their tracks while having all the other possibilities of live at their finger tips. For me this would be the perfect dj solution.Pablo Honey wrote:The main feature missing from Live is real time scratching. Which I think will hopefully come. For those who don't know Ms. Pinky http://www.mspinky.com/ , its a standalone application and a Max/Msp patch working similar to Finalscratch. You don't need any propriatary scratchamp, just their coded vinyl, a phone preamp and a soundcard. It's running on windows and OSX. The good thing is that the guy who wrote it will make the sdk available to any seriously interested developper.

Re: DJS???
exactly!!guest2423432 wrote:Yes, please Ableton, make a program for people who "dj" with 10,000 stolen mp3s. I'm sure they would be well-paying customers![]()
I mean why just make software for artists & musicians when you could appeal to every wannabe dj kid with an ipod?
why!? there is a point when everyone getting into music is a wannabe. and abelton should ween them on therir products early, 10,000 stolen mp3's and all. besides, why do you care where someone else got their mp3s? do you think NI give a shit where you get your files from? no...as long as you buy and use their product. don't believe the RIAA propaganda so much.
they already make a stripped down version of LIVE that comes free with some sound cards, so they understand this fact. they just want to provide the tools to get the job done. I personally think that a 4 track, mp3 capable version of live would be great. besides, if enough people want it, another company will pick up the slack and create it themselves. remember, at one time Acid was considered absolutely amazing, but they got too comfortable and LIVE has filled that hole. if there is enought of a demand and abelton doesnt respond, someone else will...
