I love the internet.
Heh. Err. Yeah. Fucking Slashdot, ruining my manners...

I can't believe
path finder hasn't come up in this thread yet!
It totally blows apple's finder away, and offers you the ability to actually
replace the apple finder with it by only a modest amount of hacking. Seriously, it's the best piece of shareware out there on the mac.

Understandable. But what the heck does cmd+[ do? On my machine, it just makes the error beep go off..

Dvorak, actually.

But this shouldn't make a difference, since it uses the same key combos as the english layout.

Here is a secret that keeps things exactly as u like in the Finder
Hold Option Key and drag
now exit finder and anytime you re open it it will stay exactly the same.
So what I do is choose column view and resize the window so I see 2 columns and then option drag the width of the columns so they are wider but only showing the 2 columns
It works a treat and tends to be alot cleaner and look a bit like explorer
Finder use to piss me off till I found this out
Here are 2 other options for you
If you love explorer in Windows then try Rage Macintosh Explorer
http://www.ragesw.com/
Or the best ever file management tool and everything else on the planet ultra customizable too is Pathfinder

weird - I'm convinced I tried all the combinations of left arrow + cmd, ctrl, option, shift and in the end had to look in the safari documentation to get cmd+[
but now you say it the arrows work
I wonder if I was still in Jaguar + safari 1 last time I checked because I'm sure I remember it really annoying me that it wasnt straight forward and I think the arrows would have been the first thing I tried

I never quite got using quiksilver as a launcher. I used it for a while then simply removed it and used the Apple + Spacebar and did pretty much the same thing with spotlight Apple Space then hit the first 2- 3 letters of the app and then down arrow once and enter to lauch. Ok I have to hit one more key the down arrow, but that takes 1/10th second at most. I know Quiksilver can do a bunch of other stuff but never got into it as i didnt find it usefull to me
