Seghesio is a great sonoma county winery that makes, imho, the best california zinfandels. You can pick up the amazing home ranch or old vine zin at the winery in healdsburg (they are somewhere in the low $20 range), their critically acclaimed sonoma zin can be had at safeway for around $15-16. This winery has vines that have been growing since the 1800s from plants brought from Italy.

That sounds like some good wine... I just recently had some old vine Foch and it was very smooth and palatable... I need to try some more wines from the old vines category to see if old vines are consistent with good taste...

i know you'll find this hard to believe, but CO has some very good wine goin on (they just did a version of the judgment of paris, this time with CO wines against CA, CO won or tied in most categories). try canyon winds merlot or two rivers syrah, both very good.

we were at a party in boulder recently, everyone brought great wine, everyone agreed the one we brought was best, asked where it was from, we said CO, they laughed, we were like, no, seriously. i'm not trying to talk it up too much (i prefer spanish and italian reds myself), but CO wines are surprisingly good.

Yeah, I just read that article, seems like a 'home court' competition, Colorado locals picking the wines judged by Colorado locals (Flagstaff House is awesome though, ate there 3 times) and just a handful at that. I believe there's some good stuff going on out there, it's just the sheer number of wineries all over California vs. the number of wineries in Colorado. I've never tried the CO wines, but I dig it. Given the GREAT beer tradition in Colorado I can see that love translating over to the wine culture. Nonetheless, Colorado represent!

The Rocky Mountain News is the only place running that story, go figure.

One thing I look out for are people who say they don't like wines from a certain country or region (by region I don't mean apellation.)

Random desert I had at a restaurant, a strong cheddar cheese served with Mared Sous. Unbelievably good.

agreed, the story can't really be trusted to prove anything, just provides some confirmation that there are some seriously good CO wines (there obviously are going to be some better CA wines with the variety, advanced state of industry, etc.). but i like when new regions come on the radar. i remember when people couldn't believe you could find good oregon wines until whatever french family set up shop there and everyone raves about oregon pinots, etc.

It's probably part of that weird side of wine, marketing it, getting the buzz out, letting people know that they exist.

As far as AU wines go, I really like Black Opal Shiraz...used to drink that all the time until Trader Joes came along and proved that a good bottle of wine could be had for under 10 bucks. And no, I'm not talking 2 buck chuck...but i'm definitely done spending 20 plus dollars for a bottle of wine unless it's a really special occasion...and even then i'd probably go for a bottle of Royal Zin or something...

Man, sucks i'm at work or i'd bust open a bottle right now...

Just had a(another) bottle of "Ray's Station" Merlot, Sonoma County 2002.

For a reasonabley priced bottle ($12-$15) I thought this is(was) a phenomenal merlot.
dry<--, woody, plum, jammy... not as bold as a cab but just the right intensity for a merlot.

Tastes can vary from person to person, if your into Merlots def. try this one, I thought this one was very good considering the low price!

Now to take care of this slight hangover!! water!!

btw, I did look for Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande but couldnt find it at the local winestore:-( will hit up the other wine stores in the area.
