things are much more horrifying than they seem!
Few months ago Cycling74 announced it would collaborate with ableton on a joint project.
They flew 2 geeks to berlin on a secret mission. While one of the geeks distracted the ableton team with an expose on the philosophy behind max/msp (what else?), the other geek sneaked into the main computer room, stealed live 7's code and destroyed the computers with a baseball bat!
live 7 disapeared and will now become Max/msp 5!!!

::Correction::
Your inside source is good Benshik, but the Cycling74 geek did not use a baseball bat. He used his bicycle seat:

I doubt that the Abes were planning on a new Live any time soon. They just released the "Lite" version.
If they were planning on releasing a Live 7, then wouldn't they have waited to release a Lite version for 7 instead of 6?

maybe they released the Lite version because live 7 was no more?? if it was ableton and the code got deleted this would have happened months ago meaning enough time for the abes to quickly release something i.e the LE version of 6

yeah, I bet we see 6.2- but no drastic changes or additional instruments, just improvements... maybe one major update that will generate some buzz.
Every summer the Abe camp shares some exciting news... that train is late this year. I want some news about my favorite software more than I want some arbitrary number at the end of it's name. I just want some Ableton news! Something to go

Every cloud has a silver lining.
If it was Ableton that lost their code then Live 7 would probably be better as a result.
All those coders thinking they could do it much better if only they could start over will get the chance to proove it.

If they need to piece together Live again, I believe the clip section in Live 7 will look like this:
Future me emailed present me this screenshot of Live 7 and kept raving about how great that edit button will be.
