3rdordertrauma, thank you so much for doing a quick recap of this post. i really appreciate your time. Your post was very informative. I do not have my bass amp with me at school, but i will check it out when I go home in a couple weeks.
An audio interface does seem in order though. I always wanted one if just for the sheer number of inputs on it, too. That way, i could actually RECORD my 3-piece band with all of us playing simultaneously, etc. That would be sweet.

Well, I finally got an audio interface. Presonus Firestudio Project. I have a new bass as well. A Fender Marcus Miller 4-string Jazz Bass.
I have, of course, noticed a HUGE difference in sound quality, but the bass still seems "weak."
My bass is swtichable between Active and Passive mode. Which preamp should I plug into on my Firestudio Project (there are 2 instrument level/mic ones, and 6 normal line level/mic ones). I heard if you're in passive, go for Instrument level. And if you're in Active, for go for line level, but things haven't been so clear. I tried both. In active mode in instrument level preamp, the sound is louder, but in line level preamp its weaker, yet I think line level is what I am supposed to use when in Active mode. Bah.
I know some compression and whatnot would help, or maybe that Ampeg SVT thing. I plan on micing my SWR stack when recording w/ the band, but I don't keep my stack at college (no room in my apartment) so it would be nice to be able to get a decent sound out of my bass recordings by plugging directly into my Presonus.
Any help?

Yeah, it's an AWESOME bass. I like it much much much more than my Ernie Ball Sterling (which is more expensive...and gets more attention/credit). Thick, raunchy tone. Love it.
I suppose I could lug my 1x15 or my 4x10 up to my apartment at school. I could use it as a nightstand/table haha. But it's so damn heavy, I don't know. Maybe I'll just invest in that Ampeg SVT vst thing.
I'm also cautious about bringing ALL of my music gear to my apartment since it's definitely less safe in there. At home it's all locked away in my parents' basement. At school, someone could just bust down the door and steal all my crap.
Oh well. Gotto take chances, I guess.
