logic 8................. u tryin to rub it in!??
lol
glad 2 hear u think ableton is better tho, only thing that lets it down imo is the routing and sequencing.... but im still evolving, like Live hopefully.

what you basically doing right now is recording all midi data from guru into ableton's single midi track. rather than creating new track and seperate midi channel for every part incoming from guru.
and you'd have the same problem in logic if you dont know how to properly assign tracks and midi channels

nah its pretty damn easy in logic to be fair, and u dont end up havin loadsa of tracks i.e. (1 for the sub mix of the kik (vol control) - and 1 for the midi data... no bother tho, apple can kiss my ass! until i raise 1500 for a macbook pro!

looks like this problem might have been solved now, but just incase here's what i do (and its been touched on already but hey.) I needed a solution that was replicatable in live gigs and that didn't create loads of extra tracks to clutter the screen up. This is the best solution I found as the mute buttons for Impulse aren't MIDI assignable, but Scale plugins are. So:
1. Create your drum pattern in Impulse on 1 track as normal
2. Add a Scale plugin to the track for each element in the pattern (kick, snare, hat, etc)
3. Make Scale #1 mute/un-mute element #1. Make Scale #2 mute/un-mute element #2, etc etc
4. Assign the on/off state for each Scale to a button/key/whatever on a MIDI controller (if necessary)
5. When working in Arrangement view you can have the whole drum pattern present at any point in the track and use the Scale plugins to mute the elements you don't want heard. Then of course you can un-mute them when they're ready to drop into the mix. If you've MIDI assigned them, you can hit Global Record and 'jam' the various elements in and out.
Hope that makes sense and helps! Its a bit clunky and I agree a more elegant workflow would be most welcome.

its also good 2 hear others thinking this is a bit of a problem too - purely workflow wise - Ableton take note!!

no idea tbh, ive never used Guru. The above works with Impulse because each drum sample is assigned to a different MIDI note. The Scale plugin determines whether or not the specific MIDI notes are played or not, therefore you can mute/unmute the drums accordingly. If Guru works in a similar way re. MIDI notes then i see no reason why Scale won't work in conjunction. But i might be wrong!
