(enthusiactic mode on)

Music industrie is so 20th century now. Any big artist NOT doing what Radiohead are just doing is just stupid. (Or caught in a contract ...)

Absolutely. Unfortunately not many artists have the creativity or the financial freedom to do this sort of thing.

Funny idea to let the customer decide how much to pay..... Will those who pay more get more, perhaps?

I'm sure they've decided that as everyone will download it for nothing from limewire, they may as well get what they can for it.

its either that or give the album away with a newspaper!

I don't understand it very well. The concept seems rather modern but it all depends on them having a fan base. No one would care if I released my record under the same terms.

But the thing that causes me hesitation is the need to pay up front for a product that may not be worth anything. I think a much better model would be this:

You pay, say, UKP5 or 10 up front, download the album, and within 30 days if you don't like it or think it's just OK, you can request for a refund of up to 90% of the cost.

Right now the model is: you're asked to put a value on something that you have no information about.

Yeah, if you've heard the stuff live or via bootlegs, perhaps you have an idea.

r.

I preordered the download for 5 pounds. If you want to hear a quick sample of the songs, go to radiohead.com and see the news entry with the quicktime file of snippets from cutting room floor. Sounds gorgeous.

And for what it's worth I love Amnesiac and Kid A. Amnesiac has grown on me more and more and is my favorite RH album so far.

The age of albums will eventually end. It is such an institutionalized approach to art. I don't know about you lot, but I'm more interested in where things are going than concerned for where they are now. Radiohead is just trying to find a way to make a buck in a changing world. While the album format will always exist, it won't always remain the prevailing format.

I don't see the "news entry". Can you give me a direct link and better directions?

Go to www.radiohead.com/deadairspace and go to the entry (sometime in July I believe) titled "a bit of tape from the studio" and you'll hear some little snippets from the album.

It's at www.radiohead.com/deadairspace, in the archives from 15 June, titled "A Bit of Tape From The Studio." Every song seems to be there in order.
