Bump. Has anyone tried the new external instrument device with other software like reason or logic/mainstage?
yep.. with reason a couple of try outs..
great thing is (as with hardware) you can still tweak the instruments during the realtime freeze..

yep..
another one;
what I used to do, previous to 7;
have a 1 bar MIDI loop,
loop it, say 4 times,
tweak the hardware while recording on a 2nd track, so the recording has loads of variation..
now..
the external instrument device 'realtime freezes' the exact length of the MIDI clip..
so you can't do a 4 bar recording from a 1 bar MIDI clip..
you could duplicate the notes and make the clip 4 bars long..
but you can also keep the 1 bar length and unlink the clip envelope to the length you want the realtime freeze to be..

that's very interesting. It really does change up the way I am used to thinking of recording external instruments!

This sounds like it could be a great way to use logic's instruments and effects!
Please, someone out here with Mainstage and the Live 7 beta, try it out!
Tarekith/Machinesworking, where are you?.....

How would live see it? It does not show up as an external device on its own. Do you have a suggestion?

if mainstage is a rewire slave it should work

I really don't know because I don't have the beta, but given that some people were saying the external instrument device was working with reason in place of rewire, I figured the same should work with Mainstage no?
So you're saying Live sees reason as an external device when it's on but not Logic or Mainstage? Hmmm, that's too bad.

without knowing or trying Logic wouldnt because it cant be a rewire slave, but I dont know if mainstage is

I haven't been able to get mainstage to show up as an external source. If anyone has a workaround I'll look into this.

I read the manual on Mainstage and I think it does not support rewire at all.

if you are refering to my comment; I didn't say you don't need to rewire..
sorry if that was not clear; you need to rewire..

What about plug-ins like Guitar Rig that accept both Audio and Midi? Do I still have to use two tracks to control the midi-part and record the audio or can I use an "External Instrument" to do that. In that case the External Instrument would have to pass both Midi + Audio to the external Instrument (be it GR or any external device that works on audio while accepting Midi for controls).

Mainstage is NOT rewire capable unfortunately, but I was able to use it with Live via IAC's Soundflower. You lose any sync ability, but the audio shows up in Live just fine.

A related question on behalf of all virus TI owners... is Live 7 capable of doing realtime freezes or rendering now? Having to resample Virus Control's output by hand is a bit annoying...
