Actually you know what would kill this dead is automation in session
I'm sure most of this stems from the fact that I just want to quickly record automation sweeps from my controller and the only way to do it is in arrange
it's such a bizarre and desperate omission to this program that I think the entire known universe would understand if that was the ONLY feature in Live 8 (or 7.5??)

The greatest Benefit I see with how to view this feature request is in this manner...
>Think to yourself how you would like the to Jam out with Ableton in session view, but OFC you would like to **COMMIT** some automation and *Naturally * you would like to have an option of disabling *other* Automation that as a MUSO you *Just wanto to Jam OUT* rather than committing to track...
Why?...simple really mates

Frequency conflicts...groove conflicts... ahhh conflicts.
All the best
Griff
As far as I see it...there is no side taking, thats a poor call really.
sorry I didnt really understand that post

just dont blame multi-lane auto!!!
multi-lane is a way to view data....i think your beef is with inputting data.
we want multi-lane!

gotta admit, i never have this problem and i'm actually thrilled no longer to be in the world of things like SSL/logic, where you had to worry about whether you were in touch or latch or whatever, and whether you were recording moves or just setting levels. but i also don't really do many moves (more about levels for me), so i can see why this might irk those who do more moves.

or is it too early for me and i need more coffee?

I think I need that coffee
yes it is still the same as always - that's my point
I think that should have changed
I just mentioned it in this context because I was fecking about with the multi-lane thing and I realised all I was using it for was to delete all the crap I didnt actually want recorded - and there were like 20 lanes of it
okay i got it now
it's a feature request! and not a new problem
yeah it would be cool, but i can live without it
perhaps a lock on automations you dont want to automate would be best

no I'm not eally - I'm not saying they should get rid of it or anything
just when I kept trying to open it I noticed the only reason I was doing it was to delete all the unwanted stuff

well a modifier would be simplest - probably not even that hard to implement
but I have to say I'm bitterly disappointed no one else finds this to be a problem - it is SO annoying for me I find it bewildering no one else does, but that just means it wont happen
oh well, if they implement automation in session, back to arrange on each track and alias clips we'll be a huge part of the way there
but I still think there needs to be a way of recording sequence and automation separately

Sounds like what you want is a "quick and safe tweak" modifier which lets you change a parameter without committing it into any recorded actions.
That is, a CTRL/ALT+something which, while being hold, allows for any arbitrary parameter to be adjusted without recording it as an automation event.
Another (and just as useful) variation would be a MIDI/key assignable button, for example in the transport bar, which would toggle this safe tweaking state on and off, without the need to hold the "quick tweak" keys.

that's the one!
I guess there was alot to read through, but that is pretty much exactly what I'm talking about!
I also agree a MIDI option - and it would be good if it could toggle too

now if you want to talk about automation in session... now thats a whole new story.
i never minded highlighting and deleting as far as the other goes,
i mean how do you know which automations you wont want!!??

that's why I said a modifier - so I can decide at the time

Easily: if I'm for example recording a guitar while monitoring it against the rest of the project, it might strike me that I'd like to hear slightly different channel levels, or perhaps mute some tracks on the fly in order to concentrate on a specific background part, or anything like that. With this kind of a toggling feature, I could just keep recording and improvising, adjusting all that stuff on the fly without Live interpreting it as automation events.

Yep, exactly.
Come to think of it, I might even default to keeping that toggle in the "don't record automation" position and enable it only when I
know I'm going to record a take involving automation.
