Live does have many shortcomings as a DAW, I think that has to be admitted by anyone who's ever used something like Logic. The reason I use it as a DAW is beacause when I've managed to engineer my way around those shortcomings, there remain advantages that every other DAW I've tried simply cannot give me. If it doesn't work for you then you don't have to use it, it's just software.

One of the things that really worries me about using computers to make music is this percieved "fashion" as to whats "cool" and what's not, there's not much innovation coming from the artist nowadays except maybe from people building their own software. It's one of the reasons I've been looking at Linux over the last year or so, the next innovative and truly different thing to come along is quite likely to come from an unexpected direction and give somebody new the edge. Then the pack will go "ooh, that's coool" and suddenly everybody'll be using it and it won't be cool any more.

Again, it's just software, use whatever fires your guns and don't listen to anybody who tells you otherwise.

^ Martyn, what shortcomings, exactly? because personally, having used every daw out there, there's only 1 issue I have with Live (have had for 4 versions now) - that the CPU usage sux, and that the graphics slows to a crawl with complex arrangemetns and sets. Other than that, I see zero drawbacks. Rather, there are so many ways to route audio, and so many creative things I can ONLY do in Live. My own personal opinion....not intended to fight - just curious about what drawbacks people really miss...

^ Also interested in what you have to say Martyn. I've not found anything that can mangle sounds like Live. I use it from sound development thru composition.

its got everything i need for what i do on my personal projects:

BUT

i don't do comp tracks in my own projects, (and try to avoid work on projects that do. my philosophy is that getting a good take will have better energy). I imagine trying to comp a vocal track would be pretty frustrating in live.


i don't track a lot of stuff with multiple mics in my projects. the speed of mix and edit groups in pt is pretty nice if you do.


i don't do radio or any kind of post work. One feature i can think of right off the bat that is missing for that work is that you can't display an exact length in time of a selection very quickly.



just off the top of my head.



but for producing electronic music, or writing music with audio, there simply isn't anything that can touch it.

with the 64-bit mix engine, I'm actually using L7 for a mastering project, so I really do want to know why the gripes.

and while I'm now fighting back, I wonder how FLStudio can be considered a DAW. The "multi-track" features for wav files seem so tacked-on and it's never seemed easy to me. Trust me I've tried to get on board...I mean a one-time $150 fee for lifetime updates makes the cheap bastard in me dance with joy. And it's not like it's not a great tool...of course FL is. But what makes it a DAW to the OP?
