seond the "start with free." there's some great stuff.

in live, operator first (sweems to be getting a lot more love these days around here).

second the reaktor -- it's not a programming language unless you want it to be, there's 100s (literally) of synths, drum machines, beatboxes, sample players, fx, you can use w/o any work for free.

If you're going to buy 1 Synth, I'd check out Sylenth 1. It does sound fantastic, is easy to use and has a great look.
Nobody has mentioned the Rob Papen synths. Blue, Predator or Albino 3 are all worth a look at.
For a few more $$, you can't go past Massive.

My 2cents.

Want to learn how to program synths?

BUY "HOW TO MAKE A NOISE" by Simon Cann

Best resource out there IMO

My favorite synths are imposcar, surge, z3ta, rhino, zebra 2, albino, minimonsta, massive, absynth, and reaktor.

Then impOSCar or maybe the whole GForce bundle for only $199.
The whole GForce bundle for $199? I can't find this offer on the GForce website. Is that a special offer for students or crossgrade upgrade offer?

Huh, looks like no one has the bundle anymore.

NovaMusik has good prices, regardless.

If you're not sure what kind of synthesis you're interested in I would go for Reaktor since it offers just about everything. The wealth of the user library is stunning....some very talented people are at work there.

The synths that come with Reaktor all have character. And you get much more than just those synths...
