TI chipsets are by far the most important manufacturer spec on any music laptop today, imo.

If the OP already has or plans on getting a firewire interface, then he should certainly check with the manufacturer first to see if there are reports of incompatibilities with the new Macbooks, and to what extent they actually are; if he doesn't have one, and considering his price range and needs, a bus powered USB interface might be a better solution.
there's nothing worse than selling a product based on lies. Top end notebooks with agere controllers? don't make me laugh.

While certainly an issue for many people, this is another one of those buzz topics that gets blown out of proportion on internet forums. I've heard reports from pro audio mac users with the new chipsets that aren't having any problems with their firewire gear. And in many cases where there are problems, the solutions aren't that big of a deal, like powering up the firewire device first or restarting, or connecting to a hub or an external drive.

Edit: I'm not suggesting it's not a real or important issue, as it certainly is. I'm just pointing out that it might not be that big of a deal for the OP, and that there are solutions and workarounds available, least of which are USB and Express Cards.

I'm not talking only firewire, but also express card.

and since no one dealing with music professionally should rely on USB ports for audio interfaces and HDs... it is a MAJOR issue.

Take RME for example.... when they say there's a "bad" chipset, i prefer to trust the guys who built my workhorse that's already with 5 years and zero crashes instead the chineses or marketing people. some controllers just don't cut when pushed, that's the components true, that's why some cost more than others.

good firewire for a huge number of channels and good pcmcia or xpress card for lower latencies at stress... that's what we need on a notebook.

OK. Last time:
I have a show next Saturday (Feb. 2nd) w/ my band. It would be NICE to have a laptop for that show instead of lugging my desktop of stage. It's a battle of the bands too, so set-up times may be an issue.

Now:

Dell Inspiron 1420 w/ Windows Vista, Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 2GB 667mhz Ram, 14" LCd, etc. etc. -- but probably won't arrive in my hands for a couple weeks due to build/ship times.

OR

Apple Macbook, Leopard, Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 1 GB 667mhz Ram, 13.3" LCD --can pick it up TOMORROW morning at my campus store.

Both come to same price after tax/shipping.

??? Last time gentlemen/ladies. I swear.

I use a dell laptop, bloody brilliant for me so far. Only problems i've had are ones caused by live after version 7.

2.02ghz C2D, 1gig ram.

Looovely 17' super high res screen ( this makes sooooo much difference)

If anything between the dell and a macbook i'd think about

+Software thats free/compatible to the OS (do you NEED anything particular)

+Screen size. 13' to 15/17' is a lot of extra tracks viewable at once.

+Price.

My god there is no contest.
If you want something that will just work the minute you take it out of the box, will look nice, have lots of power, not run vista, and last you for ages,
JUST GET THE MAC.
The only reason I would have a pc is for gaming. Or if I had no money I suppose, but id rather sell crack to pay for a mac then go back to using vista. It makes me feel physically sick, and angry. Very angry very quickly.
Im not usually a computer fascist, but since using my mothers vista pc at the weekend, I am totally baffled by why anyone would want one.

Black Macbook here....2.0Ghz...Core 2 Duo....2Gigs ram....been running Live on it for 1 year......love it. The only drawback is the amount of available free plugins for a Mac when compared with what I used under XP, but it has caused me to become a whole lot more creative while digging deeper into Live and I've seen my music take a fresh new direction that I am very pleased with. I don't see myself going back to Windows, unless Apple seriously screws something up in future updates or Microsoft comes out with something worth my attention. As stated before, get whats right for you. Don't end up buying something that looks cool unless you thoroughly check out the work-flow first and it really agrees with you.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the macbook this morning. Honestly, it's pretty kickass so far. I opened Live 7 briefly to test out some clips and whatnot, and I did notice a slight decrease in performance, but nothing huge. so that's all good. And after some fine-tuning, it should be a little better.

Anyhoo. Question: I have like 20 Gigs of files I want to transfer over from my PC. But I can't seem to get the two to "see" eachother, although both are on the same internet network right now in my apartment. Any tips? I went to Apple's site and they explained it briefly, but it involved typing in IP Addresses and whatnot, which seemed overly complex.

an ipod, or an external drive would do the trick... i think there might be a way over firewire also, something to do with the mac seeing the pc as an external, although i really don't know much about this...
any way enjoy!!!

Congrats, excellent choice.

For connecting to a PC, the easiest way without setting up a permanent network is to...

a) First make sure that you have some actual folders or drives with Sharing enabled over on the PC (right click on folder/drive, Sharing and Security, Share this folder on the network), and that you know you're Windows login account name and password. If you don't have a Windows login password, create one in the User Accounts control panel (Change Account, Change Password).

b) On the PC, goto the Network Connections control panel and right-click on your internet connection (Local Area Connection probably) and choose Status, then select the Support tab and write down your IP address.

c) On the Macbook, make sure Finder is pulled forward or open, then at the top menu goto Go > Connect to Server... (to switch to Finder while reading this, click on the smile icon at the left of the Dock and make sure is says Finder at the top left by the Apple icon).

d) Type in without the quotes "smb://your.PC.IP.address" and hit Connect.

e) Type in the PC's username and password, select the shared volume/folder you'd like to access, and start grabbing files and copying them to the Macbook.

From that point on, each time you want to connect to the PC, simply goto Go > Connect to Server... and the IP address should be there. You can click on the + button next to the IP address to add it as a favorite in the list.

EDIT: What if instead of buying a a 2.2 GHz Dell, I got a 2.0 GHz Mac? Big performance difference? Or what if I got 2gb or 1gb of ram instead of 3?

MAcs are all about teh overall package, all components used are of top quality, and you pay for a premium product.

I forked out £1700 for my Macbook Pro last year and obn that same day i started smiling.

Premium product, premium price, premium artist, premium performer.

Get a mac - not a dell.

EDIT: Just read the rest of the thread, so ill now say - Congrats mate, you made the right choice - one you wont regret. Welcome to happy smiling club  :( 8O   :x :?: :?:   :) :) :o :o :D :D :D
