Been awhile since I posted in this thread. I actually went to a Guitar Center (thanks tjwett!) in NYC and took a look at near-field monitors. Am going back to listen in a day or two.

The reality of my situation is: I do not really have a studio (per se). I am looking for near fields for my apartment (ie. home), through which I can mix down for a gig I have upcoming. I need to hear this through relatively good (but also relatively inexpensive since I am going back to school for my PhD) so I can get a relative sense of what it will sound like in a club setting. I just won't be able to get this through my Senn HD265s or HD 280s. The BX5's are attractive at the pricepoint, but once I hear other monitors I am worried I will somehow find it necessary to spend more. But in a relatively small space, where I won't be able to absolutely crank it, if you think that the BX5s will do the job (and are flat enough) than I will take that into serious account.

Thanks for everybody in helping with this journey. I love purchasing new toys, and there is truth in the saying that the journey is more important (and more fun) than the outcome.

BX5 will do the job, specially if you work in a small environment.
I recently bought them for my home studio (I had some self modded teledyne acoustic research vintage speakers before), and their sound is absolutely clean, considering their relatively low price.
The equalization is also very nicely customizable, via the rear panel.
If you have enough bucks, but not enough for 'proper' studio monitors, I'd say they are one of the most honest choices around at the moment.

I normally would save up and get the Mackie 824's (though I have recently been told they may be a little too bassy for proper mixing), but since they are the "reference" monitors....

so, normally I save up/do without until I can get the proper equipment, but after shelling out $$$ for a PC, and software, and headphones (my Senns cord bit it), I need something for the interim (also because now the update to L4 will be $120).

I think the BX5s will be it (and this will be the third time I have changed my mind).
