I am sick of this too, Live can do anything but like all the other computer based sequencers we have nowadays, they have graphic (only) GUIs and require you to constantly use a mouse, so they keep your hands and eyes busy all the time....

I remember using hardware sequencers where everything was done BY EAR and it is the way to do it! I agree that I will always use a computer to record, mix and master, but while composing I want to stay free of looking at timelines and hi-res graphics.... and not having to touch a mouse (cause my hands are busy making music remember?) something about visual GUIs brings me out of my composing mood -some left/right brain issues I suppose.

And no, do not reply me that you can use midi remote to operate live without a mouse and screen. You haven't tried! it is impossible.

just for the record, that was an older thread, I now got an Elektron Monomachine and finally I can sequence tr-styles steps like I used to... ...and a couple of hardware sequencers/grooveboxes/drum machines + MPC... so that is a lot of fun

...but Live8 with the grooves pool is killer!!!!! wow, still can't taps beats very well into live, but using grooves makes it a totally new app for me... I applied some on old tracks done in Live and it's simply fantastic. So mouse entry of beats and applying grooves on them makes my day!!! ...grabbing grooves from audio loops and applying them on midi rythm tracks.... I end up with very good results!!!! (but ableton add grooves to the arpegiator PLEASE!)


...so I guess we can have the best of both worlds using hardware and software ....never been a better time in electronic music!

If the screen hurts your eyes, get a better display. Lower end displays, with their poorer specs and all, can cause more eyestrain. While it's subtle, after hours and hours it can add up.

As far as the lonely tech thing goes, I know how you feel. I'm no technical slouch at all, I've designed dozens if not hundreds of PC's over the years (used to be involved in that in the computer industry) and knew what the hell I was doing. But I hit a point in 2000 or 2001 where it felt like I was spending more of my time working on the computer and less time working on what it was I actually wanted a computer FOR.

Once I talked to the Adobe customer support folks and found out I could switch my PC licenses to Mac software for $15-$20 an app, it was an easy decision. My next machine was a PowerBook G4, which lasted me 5 1/2 years with very little trouble. Even though the Mac cost me more upfront, it lasted more than twice as long as the last couple PC's I'd had, plus I just plain didn't have to screw around with all the tech support junk.

It's absolutely archaic how we control computers. Keyboards too.

A touch-screen about the size of a 46" HD TV at desk level tilted up a bit would be wonderful.
That and a bevy of tactile rotor knobs would be the bee's knees. Feels better just wanting it.

Yep, it's called Maschine! Fwict that's exactly how it works. it's software based but you can do everything from the controller. I'm loving Live 8 as well, just wish i could use it fully but i can't atm.

Yeah having the best of both worlds is where it's at for me and again i think maschine addresses that with the integration of hard and soft.

mmmmm....vibrating touch feedback...embedded knobs.....abletonlive multi touch...

it really needs to head in that direction because i cant stand mice either. god damn it i have TEN FINGERS a mouse acts like one...

Wow this is an old thread.... I'd forgotten all about it!
I'm not sick of em any more. I now have a 16 month old baby girl, so music time is limited. Now when I switch my computer on its like seeing a long lost friend again!
Funny thing is, despite having less time, I'm being way more effective. Even managed to finish my first album! Heres a review if your interested.... I was very pleased with it!

You kinda hit the nail on the head. Half the reason i use hw is a tactile interface i can control with more than one finger! I love ableton but the mouse been my means of expression is ridiculous with all that power at my fingertip(s)! I wouldn't mind trying out an apc with Live now.
