seriously, whats the freaking point?

all the time spent getting a stable program on win/mac, running worse on linux. why not practice some music making?

not trying to hate, i just wonder what this has to do with music. this just seems to be a distraction.

i can't make music at work, so it is a welcome distraction..


seriously though, what is wrong with seeking out an alternative to windows and OS X?


on a side note, i think in your case making music would be more productive for you then being critical towards people. what's wrong with geeks trying to have fun anyway?

no offence meant, dont want to rain on anyones parade here. i fully appreciate the geek factor of getting something running that shouldnt. it just seems like absolutely zero benefit for a lot of work, and youve only got so much time to spend on music.

i mean isnt the whole point of music to raise your chances of getting laid? theres nothing rock n roll about emulators. (even if its not one)

An immediate benefit is lower audio latency than windows or os x...

thats different. if ableton brought out a distro made completely for Live, with Jack and OSC etc, then i would be all over it like a rash. but they havent, and its never going to work properly on Linux without their support.

and if i can get under 2ms latency on windows, how much better does it need to be to justify the time spent?

but i take the point, if i want to rant about the pointlessness of bolting Live onto Linux, i should have started my own rant thread instead of upsetting the enthusiasts in this one. i hope we can all recover, and learn to love again.

like i said, i can screw around with this stuff at work anyways. At home, i wouldn't have the time.

sorry i had a gig in this day but soon i upload some video that show how to make music and save it on ableton with linux

it's funny - on one hand I'm really interested, on ther other it feels like a total waste of effort

I keep thinking I want to get a Mac because I'm sick of windows, but then I remember that I have a few plug-ins that I'd have to pay to go Intel Mac and everything is now running fine on my PC

so I think if it aint broke, don't fix it

but I love the Open source side of things and use as much as I can (open office, mozilla etc)

man, i think this is totally awesome. I'd switch to linux in a heart beat if i knew Ableton would run more stable or as stable as windows or OS X.

can you load audio?

i can get live to open and some things to work.. but it is mostly broken when i run it

i'v tried open suse 10.2, ubuntu and fedora 7. I had the best results with open suse

i would like some more info.

live would not play audio files, and i could not control the track routing to try and record audio into live.

couldn't open preferences or access any drop down menu

basically it barely worked.

I'm all for testing this more. I have the resources to test this at work.

I am following closely the viability and workability of Ableton Live with WINE (http://www.winehq.org). Wine , if you didnt know, allows windows applications to be run under linux/unix systems.


The workability has actually come a long way since a few years ago, and Ableton runs *almost* perfectly -- currently there is a direct draw bug that causes some of the internal options / windows within ableton not to display any text properly.

I believe this is one of the final hurdles for running wine within linux/unix systems and I think we should all be more pro-active in pushing the developers of wine to look at these particular bugs!

Honestly, if i can get the few audio applications i use to run in linux, I will give up windows completely -- a goal I hope to reach soon!

If this issue interests you at ALL , please create a bugzilla account on the wine website and VOTE for my bug! This will increase the visibility of this particular issue and of audio applications in wine altogether -- their main focus right now seems to be getting various games to work , I'd like to change that!


Please let me know your thoughts on this and any other suggestions you guys may have regarding getting ableton running in linux!
