This fix from Timothy Allen finally worked for me:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=89139
Previously I'd tried the fix as described in the Apple Forums (using old update package file and Pacifist to extract), but it didn't work. But using Timothy Allen's file plus a "Repair Permissions" finally got things working again. No more crackles!!!
@Naive Teen Idol: have you tried Repairing Permissions?

I just tried Timothy's solution myself -- and it keeps telling me that it and another file (Contents/Plugin/something else) was installed incorrectly.

Not following you.
Maybe this helps. When I put in your file (and the one from Pacifist), it asked me to authenticate -- and I did. Pacifist also revealed that file to be two or three embedded files, I think, thus the fact that it says two files are installed correctly.

you dont have to use pacifist on the zip file i supplied... just copy mine .ktext file in and that's it.. that might be your problem

I know -- but it still says the file was installed incorrectly.
I'm wondering if there's a way to just reinstall the Airport software alone.

just go to the apple download site and download the new airport patch?

I did - it says the same thing. I'm at a bit of a loss. It's possible my mistake was authenticating more than the one file -- but the way Pacifist worked, it really seemed like those were embedded in the .ktext file.

"Not installed correctly" was exactly the error I was getting. What you need to do is use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, select your hard drive and hit "Repair Disk Permissions". When it's finished, restart your Mac. That should work. Let us know...

Well, progress, perhaps. This time when I boot up, the Mac doesn't say that the general IO80211Family.kext file isn't working anymore. But the IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortAtheros.kext file still says it was installed improperly.

I had the same problem.
my solution:
-- throw the "IO80211Family.kext" file in the trash.
-- restart.
-- disc tool.
-- install 2007 update or Pacifist file.
END
