My worst audio purchase would be any of the several that left me sleeping on the couch alone.

Novation bassstation rack for the equivalent of about $200US

Never was a fan of the software version of it, it always sounded a bit thin and for that price it was rude not to.

Doesnt come anywhere near to a 303 for free or finding a space echo in the grass though

juno-106 in great condition for $200.

certainly doesn't win the thread though. I want a 303 for free god damnit.

Here are some things I've purchased and have been very happy with.

Digitech Synth Bass Pedal
I spent ages looking for a Mutron type bass guitar filter pedal that didn't cost $100s as everything does in Australia. I got this pedal for $80 AUS on eBay and it does the 70's funky auto-wah filter thing plus a whole range of synth like effects.

I also picked up a Squire Vintage modified fretless Jazz Bass for $500 AUS and after a few tweaks to the action you can sound like Jaco Pastorius in no time! Plus it's dead sexy looking.

And finally I just got a M-Audio Axiom 49 key midi keyboard controller to replace my old cheap and nasty battered Roland controller that was held together with Gaffer tape and my dodgy soldering. The Axiom has cool features such as semi weighted keys, its velocity / touch sensitive, aftertouch, 8 trigger pads for drumming with your fingers and a whole range of knobs and sliders which can be assigned to almost anything in Ableton Live. I didn't know what I was missing...

Leatherman. Unbelievable how many times I've used it to get out of a jam.

best buys for me: machinedrum, and ableton live. life would be difficult without...

best deal: got a microkorg for my yamaha rm1x, it was an especially good deal for me because i hated the rm1x, i could not get a single usable sound out of it. i'm very proud that i could get something for it. all my friends still have their rm1x collecting dust in the studios. almost nobody could believe that i could give it away and get something

hey oblique strategies - that thread is a little long or i'd check myself, but - have you ever posted your set up on the "post your set up and ugly mug" thread? cause if you've got that thing from folktek i'm curious as to what else you're working with

there are a bunch of other awesome things on that site i had never seen before too!

+1 - looks like you got the coolest folktek product ever, even. I like the wheel and all that. Cool.

EMS Putney Synthesizer for $750

I spotted this on a shelf in a classroom at a junior high school where my son was warming up for a recital. I found out whose classroom it was and offered him $750. At the time if you could find one they were fetching $1500 - $2500 if you could even find them.

When i met up with him, we turned it on, and it worked for about a minute before quitting with a 'pop' -- I took it anyway and had it repaired.

They go for upwards of $5000 these days.
