What he does do well - and this is a skill that is arguably the most important anyway - is craft a crackin' tune. I can't listen for more than 15min at a time because I get bored out of my fucking skull, but that's my baggage.

I was starting to feel very alone in here after the thread took a turn away from my original point..
Its not about his guitar or singing chops.. its about the songs.. and most of them are the Tits.

I think a lot of people are basing their opinions on him on RFS when Continuum is in my opinion when he matured as an artist. RFS is pretty middle of the road and forgettable pop but Continuum is a superb album. And there are plenty of appearances live and in collaboration with other artists where you can really see his talent shine.

LOL. In fact, my wife bought Continuum not too long ago. I just put it on and I gotta say it's a pretty great album to have on during this beautiful Chicago summer day..... And I made it past the 15min mark. Woohoo!

Right now my favorite is "Stop this train"
I think you gotta hear it in the context of the whole song, but i always tune in to this part..
So scared of getting older
I'm only good at being young
So I play the numbers game
To find a way to say that life has just begun
Had a talk with my old man
Said "help me understand"
He said "turn sixty-eight
You renegotiate"
I'm 43 so i've already gone through three of these number games...
And not once in the whole song does he sound like SRV!!

I volunteer at a recording studio for teens, and last year i got to take a whole group of them to go meet with John Mayer before one of his shows.
First off, that he took time out of his day to meet with a bunch of young musicians was awesome, and he was full of really great, down-to-earth advice and seemed really into talking to the kids about composing, the music biz, etc...
I remember one kid asked about how much control his record label had, and Mr. Mayer replied something to the effect of "well, you will have to compromise if you want to make a living as a muscian. yeah, its your art, but you can't go out there and say "to heck with you, this is MY art, not yours". My label really wanted to put my song "your body is a wonderland" out as a single and I thought it was too adult-contemporary, that I wanted to aim for a different crowd with my first big single, but i ended up going along with their wishes and the song ended up going #1 and winning a grammy, so if that's the worst thats happened to me by compromising my artistic integrity, well, that aint bad!"
He also donates a lot of $$$ to the studio to help underpriveleged kids make music.
