Do we want Live to have more Video-functionality?
V8 is good choice, might get one myself and use KrossFour as submixer.
I want to make Novation SL 37 my main Arkaos controller. Akai 49 is great but too bulky so I will expand SL with MPD or LX2. I noticed difference triggering with Akai pad and a key. Somehow pads feel more immediate. Possibility to name, SL displays are the main reason why Novation. I wanted to work directly on Arkaos but reading your post I start to consider doing it via Live. Since automapping works perfectly for me for audio work, it might be better solution. Any suggestions ?
I think your concept is great, all those midi clips etc including lights etc but for myself I feel it is better for biz to concentrate on where there is no replacement with preprogrammed server or DVDs (or kid with Macbook and NuVj). Your system is definitely perfect for lot of corporate work, where the creative live input is not important.
Playing live, maximising efficiency of midi and other controllers to make lively, exciting performance makes your service unique and is more fun .
I lost interests in AV- realising it is too much to control or too boring when too pre programmed. I rather hire a VJ and do my live PA or hire DJ and concentrate on video , I leave the lights to the LJs.
P.S. Me getting into visuals is somehow your "fault" Thanks a million Hambone, it works , I enjoy it and it pays.

I'm glad to be specialising in video now, too. The AV thing got to be an unmanageable monster, and I got tired of people-pleasing and spending 5+ hours setting up and breaking down.
And for live bands, lighting isn't so critical as it is with DJs/laptop 'musicians', where there's nothing to see. But video and VJing can really enhance a band's visual impact, especially when done well.
optional pakage for video
i would like to see more video editing functions with ableton.
this is purley because, if a easy to use creative program like ableton was based arround video editing/making it would kick ass.
this could be because i have not found the right av program
any recomendations?

not another video thread!
basic video is great for writing scores, but leave it at that, please.
there's plenty of great video live apps out there.
leave my ableton be!

Well, I'd say from a purely practical standpoint, most of the actual money I've made from using Live has involved video. So the current video setup is invaluable.
As for using it in session view and things like that, I think it would be a great idea and I think you people who are against it maybe misunderstand what would be involved - it's like the devices - there are specific people at Ableton who handle these things and it doesnt interfere with other priorities at all - if they consider it to be worth the investment then they will appoint a specific person or team who work on that and the other people who deal with the other things wont be affected at all. Then the people who don't want it need never see it - just don't drag video files into session view!
In fact these days more than ever multimedia is growing, I think it's going to be more and more expected that you will have some kind of visual element to a show - so embrace it! It would be fun anyway

For the record -there are many video apps like resolume having only one thing in common- they are not good, and none is great, except perhaps Module8 being close to good.SimonPHC wrote:not another video thread!

New Resolume will be maybe good, less likely great. Most of the developers of VJ software are skilled and dedicated but have no real funds. So all VJs have to compromise, Resolume has great interface but lousy performance, Arkaos is opposite great visual quality and FX terrible GUI.
I would love to see real professional company like Ableton to develop AV. As much as I wish success the developers of resolume their idea to get in one go into audio, with VSTs and what not might be overestimating themselves.
Video or VJ software is one thing and AV is another. I wouldnt expect even want Ableton to come with VJ software but in AV they could easily become the leader, more specificaly the first to have truly usable professional , stable AV application. Ableton do not promise but delivers, while their video functionality is simple and limited, same time it is absolutely reliable and ridiculously low on CPU. I rather have solid and reliable basic 2 channel DJ style option to play along audio then all those promising everything but not always delivering "my software is the best ever made".
Not for me, i use Live as DAW only.

how about some purists now chime in: "NO NO NO NO - Live is a sequencer instrument, get rid of the arrangement view and stop adding all these studio features! It's a live performance tool!"pstoaling wrote:NO NO NO NO
Live is an AUDIO workstation and performance tool. If you want video, try getting a plugin created. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Arkaos VJ will work. Go get that.
suggestion, to please everyone - remove all featuresforge wrote:how about some purists now chime in: "NO NO NO NO - Live is a sequencer instrument, get rid of the arrangement view and stop adding all these studio features! It's a live performance tool!"pstoaling wrote:NO NO NO NO
