Which one? There are two in the photo.
Counting the Kurzweil?

I meant the EMU. I've got a Yamaha sampler and quite like it, but most people seem to think that sampling (mangling)'s better done in software.

Yep. The Kurzweil has the sampling option installed and is a fantastic sampler/synthesizer, so I would definitely count it.

Most people seem to think it's done "better," as in, "it's easier and I'm lazy." The E-MU has its own unique sound, the filter and time stretching/compression algorithms have a personality I like, and BeatMunger is just fucking tons of fun. Oh, and tons of cool little effects that are done so damn well - like a "stereoizer" thinger (forgot the name, it's in the Voice menu). This isn't to say that "ZOMG SOFTWARE SAMPLERS = CASIO", however, I am using the E-MU for one specific thing - its personality.

And then there's the Kurzweil, which is a totally different beast. :-)

Most of the gear is old enough to drink... no kitties, though (sadly).
Now that's some nice hardware, I bet it gets warm in there...this reminds me of my old studio from 10 years ago cool setup mate.

Which Kurzweil is it? K200R V3? I have a K2vxs, & I would like to hear your mini-review of your Kurzweil. 8)

K2000R (Janis board) with all upgrades installed (sampling option, Contemporary and Orchestral ROMs, VX Setup ROMs, 3.87J OS ROMs, PRAM expansion, 2GB hard drive with separate power supply, silent fan). It was NOS (new old stock), got it off eBay - even came in original box (came from Sweetwater originally).

All in all - fantastic synth. What I love about it is building your synthesis chain out of Kurzweil's "LEGO blocks" or FUNs. Basically, you can pick and choose things like oscillators, filters, envelops, and chain them in any order you want, and modulate anything with everything. Nothing to sneeze at - this thing can sound VERY analog (I was surprised), digital, or just plain whacky - it's all up to you. The Rack version has 8 individual outs, which makes tracking out individual parts a breeze. Only 24-voice polyphony, but I never ever exhausted it. If you have any specific questions about the unit, I'll gladly answer them!

Fantastic! Thanks. I haven't had my K2vxs for very long, & have yet to get under the hood & make my own sounds. But it's such an inspiring synth, & just so musical.

The other beastie I have (which I also notice in your studio), is a Yamaha FS1R. What's your take on it?

Yep. Kurzweils are very musical and sit fantastically well in any mix - pleasure to work with.

FS1R - simply best FM synth Yamaha's ever made. 8-operator FM synthesis (as opposed to 4 and sometimes 6 on earlier models) AND formant-shaping = digital heaven. PITA to program though - google up the free editor and custom formant waveform loader. Well worth it! Wish they released an FS2R with a USB port and a better interface...

And a better manual! Can you believe how skimpy that thing is?

I did get the editor, & will hunt down the waveform loader. Great sounding machine. Cheers!

Very Basic.. Sonically untreated [at the moment], but its my little space where I can mess about with my shizz..

No Cat right now. I do have one, he's called Indi, but not in the shot!

The proportions in this shot make that MIDI keyboard look so tiny! It's that ginormous screen, my buddy scooped one of those right away
