I got the black Apple branded one and I'm happy with it. I grabbed it when I picked up my iPad at the Apple store. I didn't take the time to do any research on cases, the activity of Apple stores can be overwhelming, and really I don't think you can make an informed decision on cases just by looking at a bunch of different ones hanging on a wall. Might get a different one later but I'm content.

Tomorrow is stand in line for my iPhone day. Then I'm going to our family cabin for the weekend. I don't get a cell signal there but I plan to film some HD nature movies and then edit it in iMovie. I'll post the result.

Better question. How far off are we from cell phone calls and texting through wifi? 8O

It would be like how data works now. The phone first tries to connect to wifi and if it can't because of password (you don't have) protection or there isn't a wifi signal then it hits up the antennas. Imagine if you were making a call or texting and the phone did the same thing. This could in theory prevent overage charges because you'd be going through your nextwork instead of hitting any antennas. This would also allow you to get a better connection when the antennas are shit in the area but you have wifi.

But I don't know if that is at all technologically possible at this point.

therein lies the problem...

besides Steve is currently angry about wifi :P

you still have bandwidth issues to contend with and the limitations of dropped connections. so even though your phone is working great at Starbucks, when you go around the corner and the connection drops you have to have/find a new connection. this can't be done seamlessly without the "owners" of the access points meshing the signals together so you could hop from one to the next. I could see it working in some place like a mall in the future where connections share a similar arrangement of sorts that makes them part of a whole, but as long as they remain completely separate entities... results WILL vary.

give it time. remember bag phones... powered by the cigarette lighter in a car? pagers?
not so long ago really....

I see the immediate issue being the phone being able to switch over from wifi to antenna seamlessly without dropping the call. For now we all accept the fact of going out of wifi range but that doesn't have the instant impact that a phone call would have. Of course this could also have a backfire from cell phone companies, like we won't get charged for wifi time but the instant it hits an antenna it will be $3 a minute and $1 per text.

I wonder if my old iPhone (as of tomorrow) can be downgraded to iPod Touch status. Thanks to my frequent loneliness void filling impulse purchases my roommate is frequently the recipient of my hand-me-downs which are still considered bleeding edge technology to 87% of the south eastern united states. So could I kick it down to him without a phone account and he can sync it to iTunes and use it as an iPod?

Got this case and it's great.

Still don't use any protection when it's not in the case.

Bareback all the way.

beats me wrote:I have problems reading ebooks on the iPad. Not because it's difficult on my eyes, but because I'm so overwhelmed staring at the utopian gadgetry that is the iPad that I can't concentrate on the words before me enough to commit them to memory past 1 sentence.

Indeed. The first evening of trying to read an eBook was rough. I kept switching back and forth from iBooks to the Kindle app to the Barnes & Noble reader; trying to decide if one of them was any less AWESOME than the other. Then I would play with the text and page colour in each; marvelling at the control I had via my sexy little fingertips. Then I'd change fonts. Then I'd try to get through a paragraph, only to be interrupted by my own thoughts of "My God. I'm reading on a FUCKING IPAD. HOW AWESOME IS THAT??!!! IT'S SMALL AND WONDERFUL AND EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE."

Eventually, though, I got the hang of it and now I cruise through books easily. However, when I sit down to read I fight the urge to cruise the web or play with apps before I start reading. Sometimes I win that battle, most times I do not.

I mentioned this a few pages ago, but wifi replacing 3G/4G is definitely the way of the future. In fact, I heard on NPR's On the Media or some shit that this is what Google is banking on: They plan (or are hoping for, one of the two) on an extensive wifi system throughout the states. And how will this happen? Why, glad you asked.

Apparently there's a big unused spectrum(especially now that standard TV isn't really broadcast over the air) and that's where there's been a lot of talk about a vast wifi distribution. Some reports say that this will all be free, but all agree that even if there's a fee it will probably be drastically less than current data plans. Talk of this started around 2008, but the government has been slow to decide what to do or how to do it or....you know...government stuff.

Actually, that is FUCKED UP.

That big douchebag Walt Mossberg was saying in one of his articles that it's just a bug in the software that shows an incorrect number of bars. lol. Plausible until this:
