What I am curious about now, is to what extent are Max/Live/M4L owners going to be limited from rendering apps with these ableton parts in them for resale. It brings up new questions. I'll have to start a thread some time closer to the release...
Don't see a problem, people sell live packs that include racks as it is. People aren't really selling the rack as such they are just effectively selling a rack preset, if the m4l patch uses a Live feature it will not work independent of Live, it would be sold to work inside Live and nowhere else.
Alright, so here is the question I was gonna hold off on:
If I don't own Live, but I own Max and Max for Live, I will have access to these new "Ableton designed components". So, what is stopping me from selling apps that now include these in them as well? See, it gets a little harder for me to make assumptions.

Right now anything I build in Max I can sell (provided there is a market.) I wonder if I will still be able to render apps with these Live components.

The other question is on the Live end. Since I own both Max and Live, what is stopping me from rendering a patch via Max as an external app, and then just having a customer route it to Live. I wonder if the delay with the Pluggo and rendering vst's for Max 5 is related, because that would be the most obvious method for making M4L items available to non M4L owners.

I haven't heard naything specific about these new Ableton designed components, I'm going to presume that they are for interfacing with Live and maybe the APC40, if they are part of m4l then you can sell patches that contain them but people will still need Live and m4l to use them.

I'm sure you will I can't see any of these components doing anything but integrating with Live.

Nothing I'd say, you probably cannot use the "Ableton designed components" in this case though. Rendering as a Pluggo would be a way around this but then we'd miss out on Live integration, this where I think m4l is really going to shine.

A lot of guessing at this stage but we'll know more when we find out exactly what components for integration are available but I don't think (I could be wrong) that any of these 'Ableton designed components' will be of any use outside Live so I don't see a problem, the beauty of m4l I'm sure will be in the integration with Live, that integration won't be there with a ported vst equivalent Pluggo.

still wondering if it wouldnt be better to save up for a monome
if you're interested by controlling the clip matrix (and much more) with a monome, we're doing it since several month :
http://code.google.com/p/monome-pages/

but monome is monochromatic so, we did some rgb monome clone:
- thanks to Brad: http://unsped.blogspot.com/
- thanks to (me): http://www.julienbayle.net/diy/LiveInterface/

so.. I'll probably sell my monome in several month.
I'll post it as I'll decide to do it :)
finally, I dived.

I'll do my midibox hardware:

I begin to solder asap!
And the codes that go with is almost thought already :D
so, no way for the apc40 for me

Hadn't seen that, this is going to be mindblowing when it drops.

edit: Just spotted this on the above link about live.step

"...The live.step object handles the storage and editing of up to four sequences containing note, velocity, and duration information at each step. Each sequence has an independent time scale specified in metrical time units. The live.step object can be driven by a Live-synchronized metro object, and the step sequencer will output note event values occurring at that time. The editing interface uses modifier keys so all parameters of an event can be edited simultaneously. You'll be able to use live.step in any Max project, not just inside Live devices."

So looks like you can use some objects outside Live ?

Nice! I read this all a month or so back while working two full time jobs, so I am a bit hazy with it. Thanks for pointing this out. So, it seems like we are going to have wait and see what is leaked as it's leaked. I'm starting another thread. This is silly :)

I'm hoping to assign the a few of the track's "Recordng Arm" button as Crossfader "deck" assignments. Since there are three options to scroll through (A, B, or None), how would the LED of the Arm button behave? Is it possible just to make the LED "remain" on?

and

Is there ANY chance of this coming out any earlier than May or June?

I have one on order from a dealer in the USA who says to expect it approximately June 1.

Another online dealer is estimating May 22.

I'm really thinking about buying this now. This with group tracks + editing features via Max4Live should be able to help me assemble a functional performance interface. Very cool. Loving 8 over here.

IS there any chance that Ableton will release a patch with what you can use the APC as a stepsequenzer WITHOUT buying M4L? This must be ppossible,...

The return tracks are included in the mixer instant mapping on the APC40 right? And presumably show up after all the regular tracks? So if I've gat 13 track and 3 sends, that'll fit nicely into two banks of faders?

No. It's on the wishlist though, we'll see if it makes it into a future update.
That's a pretty serious ommission.
the more i learn about this the more it seems it was designed by someone who doesn't play music

the pan knobs are hard wired
is panning a big performance tool?

no hard wired eq controls
