sorry to bother you, but the difference is because you read the CPU meter after the initial 8 track playing.loquat wrote:1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: initially spikes to 25% and then settles at 14%-15%loquat wrote:1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: 33%

I thought that the difference between the two sound cards was significant enough I should repost. No hardware changes except the soundcard. As you can see the M-Audio card makes a big difference. It's nice having the inputs too.
so when the song started Ableton was playing the 8 tracks and you read the result 25%
you need a nice core I7 to get 14-15% on the cpu meter

Now for fun:
Enabling my usual number of inputs, buffer size 64 (2.43ms latency!), duplicated tracks 4 times so each section having 32, 24, 16, then 8 tracks:
32 track - Fail 114%
24 tracks - after change from 32 crap, but after a second or 2 settles down to 86% and works but sounds a little "crispy"!
16 tracks - about 1-2 sec after change CPU drops to 70% and all sounds nice!
Not much gained on this test by increasing buffer. 24 tracks sounds clearer though although 24 tracks takes a while to settle when playing out of 32 track section. Starting 24 from nothing is fine though.
I'd be interested to see this test using different longer samples. I imagine if the sample was longer then it would have to access the drive more. If it's a short conga/bongo hit it might basically all be held in RAM. How long is the sample, and how long does Live pre-fetch before it streams off the HDD? If it's a second of all the samples/loops there may not be any disk testing in this!
I'd like to know about the length of pre-fetch into RAM anyway, as I've been wondering about loading samples into RAM in session kits. If the first 2s is loaded into RAM then there's no point in spending hours setting hundreds of samples to "RAM" mode if they're all 2sec or less!
On other notes sometimes if Live's being slightly jumpy I turn Airport off and it seems better. Too early to say though as I've only had this a couple of weeks. This was all ran with it on (and safari/itunes open in the background)
