Vince, you've said "its how i use it"
are you running the Live4PerformanceTest.als from the .zip in the title page of this thread and giving us your actual CPU% from there?

This test isn't about your own personal live set, its about how everyone's personal computer performs when playing back the same .als - so they can be benchmarked against each other.

running the .als from Page 1 of this thread, my 1.5ghz scores 48%, so if yours actually scores 35% - you hold the secret to the mac/ableton universe and i'm sure we're all eager to know what that secret is.

Um, I hate to be a pain, but could we update the chart? Seems like we've got a lot more information since then & the visual reference would be very useful. (unless I'm overlooking a newer graph than page 1)

Does anybody know what the mac mini has scored in the test?

damnit i shoulda tested one when i was at the apple store.

i'm not surprised no one here has bought a mini. the slow hd speed is the real killer for audio work. yea you can upgrade that, but also incure more costs that makes the mini not such a good little deal. =\

I bought a mini... (1.42 model with 1GB RAM) I love it. I'll find some time to do the test. Generally, it runs faster than my 1.33GHz PB. Great little workhouse. As far as hard drive speed is concerned, I was able to run 40 stereo tracks (24bit 44.1K) in Logic from the internal.

I tried the live performance test in the apple store on a couple of different models and the results did not match at all what people are posting here.

What I found (peak):

iMac G5 1.8 GHz (Both 20" & 17"): 62%
PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz: 58%
PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz: 31%

All were running OS 10.3.8 and using built in audio.

Sorry I don't have the rest of the information; it was packed in there and I didn't have time to take everything down. I assume that the components were of the "stock" variety. And yes, I remembered to quit all other apps.

So what gives? Did I do something wrong? Are the store models just f**ked or is everyone exaggerating? I have to admit I was shocked when I saw those numbers, as I was hoping to transition to an iMac 1.8 until powermacs get a big enough boost. (or ableton supports dual processors).

the default configuration of all the apples at the applestores is "automatic" cpu. makes sense since they just sit there all day, turned on.

that setting in the system pref's has to be changed to "Highest" in order to complete the test properly. (see pg1). You have to ask one of the apple store employees to type in their password in order to change that.
They're usually pretty willing.

i have an inkling that Ableton will support dual cpu by the time Tiger is out. (good chance for Altivec there too). I think they're having to make some changes for Tiger and this is a good opportunity to add dual cpu and altivec instruction support.
