Interesting. So there might still be hope for Sonoma based laptops for audio work.
Do you by any chance happen to also use Nuendo and might be able to do this test:

Unfortunately I don't own Nuendo. If you could provide me with a copy, I'd gladly do the test however!

1. 26%, peaks at 30%
2. Desktop, Hand built
3. Windows XP SP1
4. AMD 2600+ XP, 2.13Ghz
5. 768Mb, PC3200 400MHz DDR
6. Creative USB MP3+
7. 5400RPM, I think
I'll try it after installing SP2 and also with my external soundcard to see if it makes a difference. Somehow, I have a feeling that it won't...
My laptop is also being stupid atm, so I'll have to try that out later. =/
Ok, I just updated to SP2, and it is in fact a bit slower. Average is 27%, but CPU meter jumps up to 68-95% about once every 30 seconds for less than one second. Glitchy... =/
Oh yeah, and this is also with the windows firewall and all that other worthless crap disabled.

Agreed .... I'm not convinced on the suitability of SP2 for music just yet myself.
Everything is working damn nicely on my system at the moment (if it ain't broke don't fix it rule is working well for me but naturally that could all change pretty quickly!).
I'm staying with SP1 for the moment ... When I have time away from mission critical projects, etc then I'll experiment with SP2 (but not after doing a ghost image of my system partition first!).
Perhaps I should run the performance test on my system in the interests of providing more test results.

Hey guys i've updated this thread with a newer chart to reflect more scores. Been getting alot of PM's about seeing a newer bar graph.
sorry i couldn't go all crazy with a graph, but its all in order of % with the lowest (best) being the highest. i think it will suffice.
The new chart is on the first post of this thread:

you will need at least a G5 of 2ghz to break below 30% right now.
my PB scores 48%,
so i'd say your optimizations didn't work

Adam Jay,
which OSX do you prefer the best for Live4 ?
CAn it be either 10.3.5 or 10.3.6 ?
The optimization will work,
it's just that the Live4's meter won't show it.
You can see it in Activity Monitor.
It will save you more RAM, too.
But if the meaning of optimization=Live4's meter,
guess my won't work.
The meter is not that stable if you know what I mean.
I reduced my samples to 88 to 44 samples=0ms
If I did not do the optimzation, the audio glitch will be there,
although the % will rise.
With the optimization, yes, the sound quality will rise.
I recommend the optimization for the users who need the extra edge of the power for real-time-use.
Otherwise, I wouldn't even bother to notice it.
The best trick would be, get those Athlon 64 !
I have know idea whether that is a laptop or not.
but it sure is amazing.

actually i've found Live 4's audio cpu% to be much more stable than Activity monitor or "top" in Terminal.
