What is it about cello players and climate change?
"June 28, 2013 — When faced with the challenge of sharing the latest climate change discoveries, scientists often rely on data graphics and technical illustrations. University of Minnesota undergrad Daniel Crawford came up with a completely different approach. He’s using his cello to communicate the latest climate science through music."

Thanks Mynova. A wonderful, powerful and meaningful combination of music and images, along with the very good points that you've made. It seems to me, at least, that the boundaries of music creation have become more and more narrow and superficial in their depth, intelligence and meaning, leading to a kind of mediocrity that is covered up by an ever more grandiose spectacle. This seems to be a case of 'art' imitating 'life', rather than 'life' imitating 'art'. It's no wonder we, as humans, are creating poverty, wars, climate change, extinction of flora and fauna species at an unprecedented rate, etc. The outside world reality is mirroring the internal world of the individual, precisely. (Of course, I talk mainly of those in wealthy nations who falsely believe themselves to be 'victims' and consequently find that is 'always' necessary to blame someone else.)myrnova wrote:... through all the arbitrary rationale concerning liberty,
Freedom, I must say,
Exists within unconditioned minds.
How can you be satisfied with things the way they are,
When all that surrounds us now, and so much more,
Remains inside the keeper's dark embrace?
The insatiable thirst for power has made
Idols out of mortals, gods into clay,
Soldiers into heros, children into slaves,
All damned desires, their hopes betrayed...
etc. etc. (DCD "Indoctrination")
Good old real gothic masterpiece...![]()

is quite emblematic and "self-explanatory" regarding DCD actual ideology. The fact is that in those days we (the goth fans) had no internet, youtube etc. so we had to listen well to words, meanings, metaphors, allegories, images etc. All we had were some independent "import labels records" little shops and some underground fanzines. Meanings, messages and music in itself were important. Nowadays everything, expecially music, is quite "disposable", i doubt young people would listen 10-20-30-100 times a single song and/or album. Those were the days, in my opinion. Nowadays it's just "wow, cool", very superficial listening or smth. Nothing else.
No doubt you've read:

This is the usual marketing and propaganda put forward in a consumeristic driven society. It's a 'greenwash'.
If you want to 'really' understand this 'greenwash' then read this book:
"Stop Signs - Cars and Capitalism on the road to economic, social and ecological decay"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y74XX0
And after you're read "Stop Signs - Cars and Capitalism on the road to economic, social and ecological decay" read this (all 50 pages):
RENEWABLE ENERGY – CANNOT SUSTAIN AN ENERGY-INTENSIVE SOCIETY.
https://socialsciences.arts.unsw.edu.au/tsw/RE.html
Then you will start to understand the problem.
Alternatively, If you'd prefer to continue a belief in 'hope' then carry on as before. Ignore the facts, keep driving your car, keep reading propaganda that supports your belief in 'hope', and above all else, remain ill-informed. Looks like humanity is determined to put 'hope' to the test. Perhaps 'hope' will save us?? Let's all 'hope'.

Fuel cell to power an average home...

1.5 KW is plenty, and it (or any similar unit) should be built in to every new house. No need for new power stations.

Important: Read This: Understand the Limitations: There is no free lunch where energy is concerned:earthloop wrote:Fuel cell to power an average home...

Virtually the whole of this paper is predicated on the assumption that we will still need large power plants (of whatever type...solar, wind etc) and a large grid to transport energy over distances.krulecello wrote:Important: Read This: Understand the Limitations: There is no free lunch where energy is concerned:earthloop wrote:Fuel cell to power an average home...

This is totally the wrong way to look at the problem. What is needed is a reversal of the way we produce and distribute energy. Obviously you didn't read my thread. Brief as it was, I am proposing that we do the exact opposite of what has developed over the last 250 years or so in the form of centralised production and broad network distribution...so totally inefficient. This mode of energy production and distribution was never designed to work on the scale it is now forced to do. This is why all the other options look inefficient. I am going to bed as it is 5.38 here now, but I will contribute some more info tomorrow.
Oh, and I do agree with one thing: we have to use less energy or make more efficient use of energy. That is behind my own thesis...more later.

Meanwhile, here is some music and a vid relevant to the topic...great new song by David Bridie ...watch for the dramatic ending!!!

P.S. There is a Cellist on the album Wake from which this song comes (Helen Mountfort on cello)

Actually, lack of hope is probably exactly why I won't read those books. It's just depressing to hear the only option is one that simply will never happen.krulecello wrote:This is the usual marketing and propaganda put forward in a consumeristic driven society. It's a 'greenwash'.

The problem is that people who are really into doing something about this seem to miss the point that the vast majority doesn't care as much. Guarantee as more and more superstorms, droughts etc happen, people will bitch and moan at their government or whoever to take action and prepare, the politicians will say whatever they have to to calm people down, then then when everyone's finished cleaning up they go back to work and forget all about it.
I'm sorry again to be negative, but the only actual "hope" I see is to change technology to greener tech. I mean you will literally have to tear cars and all things energy related out of humanity's cold, dead hands.
After a century of western power polluting 3 billion people in Asia are only just coming online. It's going to get worse before it gets better, the absolute only chance of doing something about that is to make the cars less damaging.

Fuck that, seems to me like not bothering because "it's hopeless" or "no else cares" is missing the point.
That's as passive as having hope.
Relying on and waiting for better technology isn't going to cut it.

Re: Climate Change & Einstein's - You cannot solve a problem ...
^well honestly I don't think it should be underestimated just how much of a role spreading information and education can play - i.e. the younger generations are already way more aware and actions are being taken slowly and surely to make changes. So even those of us who can't do a lot personally can still contribute by making it an important issue, teaching our kids, voting green, choosing the best environmental option when possible etc...
my point is cars aren't going anywhere, so green alternatives are worth the effort.
