No iphone required. Less is More!
These avoidance methods seem counter-productive.

A simple look of intense disdain to someone upon first contact (although requiring a little effort at first), puts them on the defensive, and then they tend to actively avoid eyecontact with you.

This saves so much energy and time in the long run.

Later, as need be, turning that frown upside down and paying them a compliment will endear them to you. Perhaps enough to convice to give this bad T-Back a yank and scream - NO Genius earns minimum wage and works retail!

Then look intently into the phone while you walk on by. No need to avert eyes or any of the other high school nonsense you normally pull...a much more mature way to avoid eye contact. In fact, the more intently you look into the phone, the more legitimate your eye-contact-aversion. Hell, you don't even have to turn the phone on, as we all know how the battery life sux ass, so might as well conserve juice.

More useful tips coming soon to a totally unmoderated music forum near you.
I have been using this trick with my bog-standard Nokia for years!
I remember reading a story years ago - Chris Eubank was wandering about on the phone, except he was sprung cause his phone rung
