yeah - i shouldnt get too down on them - they can be cool too (the studio gear section at kbraurei).
alot of my business ends up there when i forget to order stuff from thomann rechtzeitig, right before the tour and i have to take what i can get at saudoofland. bleh.

Waved goodbye to portability and got the M-AUDIO KEYSTATION 61ES in the end. I know, I know, M-Audio... but really, there's nothing else out there for me...
It has now taken over all the real-estate on my desk, but it's great to be able to muck around on 5 octaves at last...

Edirol are good, however they're not the best.
If you want a simple, high quality keyboard controller, I'd STRONGLY recommend purchasing one of the EMU X-Board range. I don't think they have MIDI In, sadly, and the buttons are a little wobbly, but the rotaries and sliders all feel pretty solid, as does overall construction.
Best thing though, is the keys as they have a very pleasant, semi-weighted "synth" action WITH AFTERTOUCH. That in itself is good reason to get an X-Board: aftertouch and GREAT key action! I think they're the only controllers at this kind of price with AT, and don't feel spongey as hell. I have one of the cute little 25 key models and it's slotted right into my new, slimmed-down setup nicely.
