+1

yeah I'm seriously tempted - for $500 if I had it spare I'd consider it

logicprohelp.com is a very good forum as well, no fun at all but helpful and full of real depth knowledge.
that's funny - I've thought the same thing. this forum has tons more personality...kind of like the software....although I agree that Live and Logic have different strengths and I don't love the idea of Ableton trying to become the all in one solution....

I hope my university computer store still sells this at the super low price of $150 that they sold me Logic Studio 8 at a year ago

Plug in GUI's in Logic can now be resized up to 200% too, which goes a long way towards making those tiny controls mosre useable :)

Give Apple a call. Well worth putting in a little time on hold, they usually make good in cases where you bought the old version less than a month ago.

I bought Logic 7 right before 8 came out. I was just outside that grace period where you could get a free upgrade. I called Apple and bitched (with extreme courtesy), they knocked off $100 off the upgrade price of $200...

Not bad, not bad...
If you can imagine it, it can happen...

Yeah, I'm going to. Thanks for the suggestion.

I actually don't think they took too much from Live.
A little, but mostly pro-tools and some of the Roland hardware stuff.
It's actually exactly what I heard people asking for (elastic time, transient editing, more slicing options, etc.).

It's definitely an audio update.
Meaning: not too much in there for us midi-only folks.
A little, but not much.

If the fix the Core Audio Overload bug, I'd get it just for that.
Unfortunately, I've already seen several overload threads with Logic 9, which I find just plain stupid.

Should have optimized it for intel and made it 64bit (it's not either one, btw... it's 32bit, and universal, which I think is a mistake since the PPC optimizations from years ago are likely the culprit in the overload bug).

I might get it, though.

I said bye bye Recycle when I start using Live (recently acutally). Slicing option are I think really important and it's not suprise that other DAWs go in that direction.

So now Logic can do easy slicing stuff... Does that make it better than Live?

I don't know if I missed something with logic pro 8, but, omg, ESX24 was a real pain in the ass. Since I'm really into sampling that was a deal breaker finaly and I don't use Logic pro much anymore.
Sure there is good plug in, instrument, etc ... but nothing I would exchange against Live's simpler/sampler, the drum rack, and all these tools that make sampling so confortable.

Quick impressions after fiddling around with it a bit.

Installation ROCKED. It detected my existing installation, and was able to skip over some of the sound library bits that had not changed since the last version. That drastically reduced the installation time, whole thing start to finish took about an hour on my laptop (Logic Pro 8/Logic Studio took 3-4 hours).

They minimized the manuals. Instead of big honking printed manuals that weighed in at 15 pounds as with the last version, they went with CD-case sized booklets that boil it down to the essentials. Complete expanded text can be found in the help section of the apps. Not sure how I feel about this, I kinda like having hard-copy reference material. Not sweating it much though, since the info's all there and I'm sure I'll be able to get a 3rd-party book soon. Overall though the packaging is much smaller (about the size of a CD box set compared with 2x the size of the Ableton Live 8 Suite box) and lighter (under 2 pounds vs. 15 with the last version.

It's a 32-bit Intel app. Runs well, and seems much better on resources. In Logic Pro 8 if I ran something complicated or a couple dozen tracks, I could occasionally find myself facing the 'overload' warning. This time around I had a few background apps running and was able to play all the demo tracks without a hitch (Lily Allen's The Fear, The Killers' Spaceman, and Santigold's You'll Find A Way Remix). The Killers track gave it a real workout, not even going past the halfway point on the CPU or HD load meter despite it being 81 tracks and me playing around in the mixer while the track played.

This would seal the deal for me, I am constantly running out of juice on my core 2 duo 2.4ghz MBP when it comes to the end of a track in Live 8. If I can squeeze a substantial more bit of grunt out of my CPU with Logic, I'm all over it.

That, is Logics strong point, it was CPU efficient as hell when it was mac/PC, and it still is now that it's OSX only. In Logic 7 VS Live 5 it was brutal, probably not as much as that now, but Live could only get about 60% of the CPU that Logic could. It's still probably at least 20% more efficient. From what people told me, this has to do with Logic not poling the tracks with plug ins on them constantly like Live does, since it's not geared towards live performance like Live is.
