If the only reason you're buying an application is because you can't steal it, you're missing the point on a very grand scale.

I used a pirated Live 5 on PC for a couple of years - then I moved onto Mac and discovered that there was NO way to get a pirate copy.

So I did the decent thing and forked out for Live 8 Suite. I figured if anything was worth buying legally, Ableton deserved it.

In time I will get a legit copy of Komplete, but I have just finished uni and have some debts to take care of first!

i remember when cubase worked better in the cracked version than the original one, because of the CPU stress that the dongle check was causing. back then it was notorious, and many ppl that has the legit cubase worked with the cracked one. dont know if this is the case. im still stuck with Live 6. Its all I need, it costed me an eye of my face back then and i dont have money for 8 .

yes, but this is from a bygone era - in the days of Atari ST and early Cubase VST there were people who owned the product who ran the crack for better performance

Cubase 4 has not been successfully cracked and some groups such as H20 have said they won't waste their time trying anymore - it took them 18 months to crack Cubase SX3 and even then some features were missing - Cubase 4 Studio crack doesn't have any of the new stuff (i.e. vst3, new synths etc) working.

More often than not, Live will timebomb on warezed versions and that comes courtesy of many muppets on here who come on admitting their usage of non legitimate Ableton product. And even some who are sitting back thinking 'huh, my crack has been working no probs for ages', and then out of the blue - kaboom. It might not be today, next week, or next month, but the timebomb is gonna get ya eventually ...

agreed on the time bomb in ableton live, have seen that myself with a friend in slovakia, happened to him before a show, he bough right away a download to be able to perform... Does not change the fact that are cracks of any Live version out there and some are 'better' then others... That's all...

any software is available... It's again a question of moral not availibilty...

Maybe he was simply disappointed because I told him that a free of charge Live is out after he bought a legal copy. Or he is angry because he flog a dead horse to pm me for the download link (This would also explain his diction). But I seized the opportunity to tell him about all the other bad and sinful intrigues which take place in the bad internet(I also teached him the words "torrent tracker" and "dickhead" amongst others). No his ideal world is broken into pieces... Hopefully he will not commit suicide.




On the other hand I'm glad the topic is current back to serious(Thought it was gone caused through some ill-bred arseholes who got no other intention than spoiling threads rather than being able to hold a conversation because of lack of intelligence)... Maybe this is a good opportunity to post an abstract of my intention why I started this thread because I don't believe in hush:

1. Back to the day I've got huge problems to unlock my Live 7 Suite. The main problem was that I bought all of the Suite Instruments separate afterwards and Ableton could not manage it to provide me a single serial to unlock all of the Suite content (Still so with my Suite 8 ). Therefore I had and have to unlock all pieces separate and it was a pain in the ass because I never never got internet on my studio pc.

2. I try a lot of different hardware i.e. processor, file systems, memory, main boards, etc. consider it as a kind of hobby to optimize music pcs. And it is not funny if you plan to have a nice day trying new hardware and you got the message that your unlock limit is reached. That was only caused through a internal network card I removed via bios and a new harddisk. (Nevertheless hands up for the abes who expanded my limit as quick as possible).

3. I went into a club where a dj was performing with Live 7 and I asked him about his experiences concerning the stability in a live situation and the unlock procedure... Unlock what? He told me also (very proud) that he was performing and producing since eight weeks without any crashes.

4. This experiences raised the idea to use the cracked copy of Live Suite because in my opinion I would do nothing wrong as long as I own a legal copy. Nonetheless I refused these thoughts because I don't felt comfortable with them and I'm still with my legal copy asking the abes to expand my unlock limit now and then...

Therefore I ask myself why must the copy protection be as hard as it is if it could be cracked very quick and a legal owner has do deal with its complications and disadvantages whilst the users of the cracked version are laughing? Effective copy protection in a nutshell i.e. efficient OK, but as blanket as that it accesses if you change a usb network device??? My suspicion that the copy protection causes CPU spikes was only a suspicion as I'm not deep enough into the techniques behind the copy protection. If someone could proof the contrary I would be glad... Just try to remove the unlock.cfg after you started Live... How long will it run? Will it quit after a while? Maybe all the discussion about that the unlock procedure is done only once at startup is obsolete then

Indeed, I don't know that much reasons why a cracked copy of a stable piece of software should be less stable as the crackers don't change anything in the source code. Even if they would, they couldn't because they don't own the sources and therefore the main part of the software is left untouched...

You've got to the point... If you once contacted the quick and affable customer support of ableton and you can still live with the cracked copy of Live you also go out and steal grandmas handbag...

I think it's time to reconsider the whole copy protection thing like apple did(they recently removed the iTunes copy protection afterwards to pursue another strategy). Otherwise it will be a cost-intensive cat-and-mouse game. And the winners are always the pirates because they don't have anything to lose! Anyhow Ableton is on a good way because they follow the strategy of customer proximity. Maybe in future software pirates are no longer heroes because it's hard being a hero if you break in an open door and get outlawed by the majority.

seriously though, there are some issues with modern copy protection systems (like Synchrosoft's E-Licensor) in that they significantly contribute to CPU consumption if their crypted data arrays/code are compiled into essential parts of the program that execute in a process loop, for example plugin's Process()-like method. This may slow down performance dramatically, but it really depends where the copy protection is placed, when it activates, and what it does exactly. One last word: thankfully, Ableton's copy protection isn't from Synchrosoft.

1. Live's copy protection does not cause an additional CPU load. Live does not connect to the internet either.

2. If the CPU meter shows a certain CPU load even though your Live set is empty, disconnect your audio interface and check again. It is most likely your USB / Firewire audio driver which eats your CPU resources.

3. We know that any kinds of copy protection mechanisms are a hassle for legal users, but there is not way to avoid that. We do however try to make it as easy as possible. Unlock it once and forget about it. If you frequently reinstall your OS, there's a way to save unlock keys if you just erase your harddrive instead of overwriting it with zeros. That's totally sufficient for an OS reinstallation and will preserve your machine code. If you unlock Live again, it just downloads the same old unlock file from our servers, which does not count as a new authorization. Thus you don't have to contact us for new unlocks all the time. As long as you use this method, don't change any hardware components or install it on a new computer, you should be ok.

4. Live 8 allows you to unlock all Suite instruments at once, also on offline computers. It's explained on our website:

5. The network card problem was a bug in earlier Live 8 versions which has been fixed.

6. We will not abandon our copy protection mechanism. It works perfectly fine for us and for most of our users.

7. If you feel that using a crack works better for you nevertheless, feel free to download whatever you want, but be aware that this is illegal. It might be a good idea to keep this for you and don't talk about it on internet forums.

8. There is currently no fully working crack available. They will all terminate sooner or later. Believe it or not.

Latterly... It wasn't the case with version 7 i.e. the former authorization method. And customer support couldn't help me out with an adequate workaround... This drove me nuts!

No misquotation... If you read my latest post advertent you certainly noticed that I only considered to go that way as result for my desperation rather to do so! I don't see my post as a seduction for piracy rather to speak out what's sadly common and the huge interest in this topic shows that it is not an ace. Never regret... I'm a paying user since version 5. Thanks a lot for the great opportunities Live respectively Ableton gave and will give me in the future
