I think that you're forgetting one very insatiable factor... human greed.

Even if you could get enough people to shift their thinking... eventually corruption will rear its head.. I want more tomatoes than him or why has she got the most vacuums - that kind of thing.

I like your idea (a lot) but I think that you are far to trusting and possibly forgetting the evil that men do...

money attracts shady people, always has, always will. then there's the people inserting themselves as middle men. a lack of deregulation, depending on trust is the first areas people will take advantage of.


it's a lame idea. money can buy you happiness, you can not worry about it. if I want a new sound card I sure as fuck don't want to go onto f-ing facebook so I can befriend some random stranger that deals in audio electronics. I just want to go online, type in my credit card number and wait a week for it to ship.

I dont think greed is a problem, I think actually that greed might be the main reason for using this tool, because its a tool that saves you money and looks out for your money not to end up in the hands of banks.

There is no room for corruption here - who fucks up is out, like on ebay. And like on ebay, people care about their reputation cause they want to remain in business.

BTW in this scenario you would even care more about your reputation because its a friends network.

people get ripped off on EBay all the time. Hell one posted to the forum about getting ripped off on a Live license he bought from someone.

there will always be bottom feeders and people trying to weasel more than their share. you're being naive if you think that they won't.

Like on ebay, its a matter of taking a risk or not taking a risk. And the closer you are related to someone, the more you will be willing to take a risk, and the more the other party will try to oblige.

Greed is irrelevant IMO in that it is personal. The potential in Barter is that the concept of 'value' can go different places. The idea of a market value for an item is far more liquid when trading on the basis of need. One man junk is another mans treasure.

Not at all. What you describe as capital is just an incentive to be productive. If people believe in your ideas they will support you (=venture capital). And you will have more success explaining your projects to friends than to the banks.

Venture capital rarely comes from an individual but from a bank or corporation. They have to convince their shareholders that your idea is worth risking cash on. Are you going to personally convince hundreds of people to front you a billion dollars every time you want to explore for oil or build a power station? I dont think youre grasping the sheer scale of liquid money required to keep the current technological society moving.

As pointed out before, money is an incentive to get people to work. For a good idea you could always gather large crowds of people and goods. Companys that make cellphones today can still make cellphones within that system.

Anyway, this alternative system might not replace the monetary system entirely, but it could take away a good share.
