Playing with Logic a bit and I really like the idea of being able to integrate logic and live together better

Logic has many years ahead of Live in a lot of ways as far as linear arranging goes, and I would love to see the session view developed a lot further with Live more so than the arranger

if the situation with session automation is that they can't do anything about it because of the relative/absolute thing between session/arrange then I would happily drop ableton's arrange view altogether to have an enourmously flexible session view combined with Logic's arranger

a "Live Session" edition of Live that was just session view and half the price
But this would mean that your new Live Session edition would evolve independently of "traditional" Live, and by definition wouldn't be backwards compatible (otherwise, why bother splitting it). Personally, I only use Live for both live performance and production, and I'd rather see Ableton's limited resources concentrate on both aspects rather than be stretched too far in one direction (either way).
absolutely right, it would have to be a separate product. But that would be a good thing IMO.

Ok, so who will develop this new product? I agree that session view automation would come at much cheaper price in terms of resources, but still you need to get the extra effort for development, test, support from somewhere. Either you get that from the existing resource pool, which will slow down evolution of a balanced, "traditional" Live, or you finance new resources based on extra revenue from your "Session Live" and I think it's not worth it. Don't have any figures, of course, but if I ran Ableton I'd take a long hard look at the bottom line needed for full lifecycle support and impact on existing user base (e.g. less users now upgrading their traditional Live), before considering something like this.

Hang on... maybe this is what mysterious Bitwig are developing...

nice thread, very nice thread, loads and valid issues from 'both' sides are raised in an orderly fashion :D (i just wanted to express that i like it, remark to myself! watching my language...uff, it's boring, thou... )

let's see where it's hitting at... i just feel that they will be sooner or later forced, because of what is happening in the market, to make a little more focused approaches and decisions in the one or other direction... or they take a big risk and blow the company up and at least double the resources, etc... to accomplish all at once and quickly.

who knows?

I agree with developing a specific "Live" mode as its gonna be a challenge to approche both angles at the same time as there parts of the core architecture that need changing to allow some long overdue session improvements.

I'm gonna dig up this ol chestnut
