Re: Something New and Unusual is Coming to Puremagnetik
I'm actually surprised about all disappointment in PM over this considering the years of great releases they've given us for dirt cheap.
But I'm also not much of an under the hood type of person. Half the time I'm not even much of an over the hood person when it comes to music production. So for me the price point of M4L is a little too high for somebody who isn't going to get the most out of it. I would be more than thrilled to pay for a runtime version because I have absolutely no problem with somebody else doing the heavy lifting. I would also probably pay for devices if the price was reasonable. PM prices have always been more than reasonable.
Part of this seems like it's stemming from a desire to get more hand holding for M4L because just ownership and whatever tutorials are out there aren't opening up the huge gate of inspiration some people were hoping for. I know it hasn't been out that long yet but I really haven't seen anything yet that would make me want to buy it. Time will tell.

from what I understand from experienced max users is that you NEVER want to start a patch from scratch. you grab a thingy you need from what you've already coded, you rape the help files and use what others have done. it's a LOT easier and gets the job done faster.
FWIW I hope to make some of the basic stuff and then publish them open source, with notes on how they work so other users can use them to make other things. in the end I will benefit because users will make things I make even better.

I just love making unsophisticated little doodads that do fun stuff. Like this little toy I posted over here: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=131992
Map some knobs to those four parameters and you can have some fun making odd noises. I'm still figuring out what it all does because the main guts are code I got from a teacher. Maybe someone else will tinker with it and learn something, or help me and others learn something. Maybe they learned how to map knobs to the number boxes just from my suggestion and now they know how to do something they didn't before. This is what I love about Max.
I'm also totally ok with people selling devices and I will buy them if the price is right. But that's just buying effects, it's not what the art of making noise with Max is all about, IMO.

I think this is a big part of it. I've spent the last 3 days going through the tutorials and trying to get into it, and I just can't. I mean, I understand the concepts and can follow the ideas just fine, but man is it putting me to sleep. Reminds me of classes in school that I just dreaded. I look forward to seeing what others create for sure, but I've just had to accept that rolling my own is likely not going to happen.beats me wrote:Part of this seems like it's stemming from a desire to get more hand holding for M4L because just ownership and whatever tutorials are out there aren't opening up the huge gate of inspiration some people were hoping for.
I certainly understand why some people would want to lock their devices, but on the other hand it IS a bummer too considering there's no runtime available.

I'm also surprised at some of the specific people posting about this brick wall with M4L because I thought they would be the people churning out crazy devices left and right. But it seems plenty of people had no real idea or plan for what they were going to do with it and want some already made devices they can alter and tweak to their liking. Thus the tone of this thread.Tarekith wrote:I think this is a big part of it. I've spent the last 3 days going through the tutorials and trying to get into it, and I just can't. It's probably just too early in the release for that equilibrium between those who know what they are doing and those who learn by reverse engineering those devices.
Re: Something New and Unusual is Coming to Puremagnetik
I think it's a bit rough to give Pure Magnetic grief for selling closed content. They are a business and the market will tell them if it was a good decision or not.
As this is the first payware content, amid what I assume is a reasonable amount of free nuggets, then the sky is hardly falling.
To the complainers, you need to be honest, you have buyers remorse for a different reason. You saw unlimited potential in M4L, but missed one crucial detail from the picture - yourself. Things with unlimited potential are by nature labyrinthine and damn hard to master. M4L is software development, and software development in general is never going to be a cakewalk. It takes a lot of time and effort to understand what the basic concepts even are.
Some people are well suited to toiling at the code-face, but many more people are not. The Venn Diagram intersection between musicians and programmers is smaller than many would think. It's why I wondered initially at Ableton's decision to go with Max as their modular interface. Ableton users generally value its simplicity and ease of use, while Max is erm ... not simple or easy
It'll take a while for all this to sort itself out. But don;t blame Pure Magnetik for your own dawning realisation that you are not Robert Henke, able to both code and play music software. If everyone could do it, they would be doing it.

Knowing what you want to do with M4L and wanting to tweak others' devices are not mutually exclusive endeavors.beats me wrote:I'm also surprised at some of the specific people posting about this brick wall with M4L because I thought they would be the people churning out crazy devices left and right. It's not just about reverse engineering things. For me it's even more about customizability. If I like a device someone has made but I'd like to add that one little tweak that will fit it into my workflow, well that's what Max has always been about, doing things your own way (even if it is starting from someone else's code). Also, the two groups you mention are often the same people. Studying pre-existing code is how people get to "know what they're doing."beats me wrote: It's probably just too early in the release for that equilibrium between those who know what they are doing and those who learn by reverse engineering those devices.
