Who cares about 64 bit? When's 128 bit coming out? haha... but really? I bought a new mac pro with the thoughts "Wow, I'm getting a very powerful machine, I'm going to be able to do whatever I possibly want on this thing" and I ran into memory problems only 1/3rd of the way into my project! With the rate of advancement technology is taking, they should start working on a way to easily transition into 128 bit soon. I'm sure that once 64 bit hits it's going to open up some pretty big doors, but there's always going to be someone bigger who needs to walk through them.

Any bets on how long until someone is on here with issues maxing out memory while on a 64 bit version of Live? haha.

I propose a comprise, let's go 48 bit

The thing is 64 bit does not just let the app use twice what 32 bit lets you use. It lets you use way way more. 32 allows up to 4gb. 64 bit lets you use essentially limitless amounts of ram by any conceivable standard for a long long time.

On a side note, I think it's too bad that freezing a track doesn't free up the ram. Why is that? I wanted that recently using some of the huge stand-up basses in Trilian (22,000 samples!). It's pain to have to flatten and completely remove the plug-in. I'd rather freezing frees up the ram.

I know, it really sucks.I'm making a continuous album that is being written as one song. I'm 20 minutes in and out of ram. What I ended up having to do is make separate projects within the one and just work on sections at a time. Not ideal at all. I really can't wait for 64-bit, I need it badly. The other option I thought of (Which would be quite a shame to have to do) is run the heavy plug-in in Logic and route the audio to Ableton, but can Ableton accept audio coming through from Logic? Or is it possible to run a second computer and midi sync and route the audio into Ableton through an audio interface somehow? I've just been spending the past couple days trying to figure out how I can do this project all in one go.

How much Ram do you have? Maybe you could run multiple instances of Ableton and each instance gets 4 gigs of ram? And then join them together in a 64bit-DAW or so?

I've got 6 gb, I would get more if I would be able to do that. The thing that's wierd though is it maxes out and gives me an error message while only using 2.8gb for Ableton, and having 3gb still left for the rest of the system. Shouldn't Ableton run until it's up to 3.6 or 4gb? Can you run 2 instances of Ableton?

Apple don't beta test with public and don't do what Ableton do (and occasionally Steinberg) and put out betas as updates either , but you're not necessarily correct vic - opinion is divided on Logic 64 bit. Steinberg had the grace to not charge for Cubase version 4.5 which was the 64 bit beta version (if they'd been Apple, they would would just have waited a few months and put it in as the next version and charged for it, with no mention of the word beta, which seems like a 'dirty word' to them).

I know that Timothy Allan wasn't overly impressed with the 64 bit version early doors (maybe this has now changed?) and plenty of people on other forums are expressing that they don't like the 'beta-ness' of 9.1 - whether it's called a beta or not is just semantics. Early adopting something like this is more likely than usual to lead to problems.

Dependency on 32 bit libraries and plugins is still the case, so not many people are actually harnessing the power of being able to access 8 GB of ram or more right now, because of some gremlin chucking a spanner in the works.

I'm not sure I see your point here. Apple did not charge for Logic 9.1 either, which is the one that brought 64 bit.

What OS are you on?

For mac, just copy the application as another one and rename (example "Live 2"). Then open that one as a second instance.

Yea mac. K I did that and it worked. Now, I just gotta figure out how to get the audio to go into the other instance, and a midi sync perhaps

audio should be easy with soundflower.. midi sync or having one ableton master and one slave is something I've never heard of anyone doing..
