?

sort of.

i think he's talking about truncating a polyrhythmic cycle so that he get some of the feel without disrupting the time of a single meter composition.

just want to post my view on rythmics

I think of groups: groups of 3, of 2, of 5, of 7, etc.

for groups of 3:

if you got a bar in 4/4 with a subdivision of 16th notes
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
1 2 3 4
and you do an accent on every 3rd 16th,starting on the one, you get this (in one bar):
XxxXxxXxxXxxXxxX
1 2 3 4

repeating this bar, you have to run it 3 times before the accent starts on the one again.

what you did with truncating the rythm, works here by just repeating a bar, or half a bar, or 2 bars, etc

2 bar groups of 3
XxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXxxXx
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

then you could start the accent not on the "1", but on the second 16th note

xXxxXxxXxxXxxXxx
1 2 3 4

as posted before, these groups of three (or accenting every three 16th notes) is really common in dance, pop and rock music. all these "funky"bassdrum figures are based on this.

so, this also works in 5, 7 or what ever (always referring to a 4/4 beat).
in groups of 5, the bars will match again (accent on 1) after 5 bars, etc

i feel if you have a system that works for you to just get faster to your results, i might be some mathematical or theoretic thing ;-) doesn´t affect the creativity in a negative way...

ps: you can get more mindblowing rhythms by applying, say, groups of 4 over a 6/8 rhythm.

ahh and the subdivision could also be 8thnotes ortriplets or whatever.
