here is a message I've got from the mackie tech support:
The program "Commander" and its primary mission is to control External MIDI hardware but it can be setup with General MIDI to control software. Many of the feedback features of the C4 are disabled when setting the software up in General MIDI mode, as you will not see feedback to the C4 screens from the software, it's only "ONE WAY: OUT". Ableton Live has a very good "Learn" implementation for the C4 which makes programming in the software pretty easy. The question is how that would behave with three C4's. I've never tried it to see if there are conflicts. The C4 has trouble when trying to use it to control soft synths and Hardware at the same time. I don't think the third unit would be able to do that. Think of the C4 as a big "mouse". It doesn't really have any brains of its own. It's all about what you can do in Live, and with Commander for hardware.
