Re: Avatar - its a ripoff
The way I see it this movie isn't about environmentalism or white guys learning from/saving indigenous people- that's what James Cameron WANTED it to be about. Instead it's about what James Cameron IS about, technology. The special effects are state of the art not because of how they look, but because they almost go beyond visual to the point of pushing buttons. Obviously film has always done that, but this might be the link between film and a future with virtual reality.
Or maybe I just watched Caprica.

How was that by the way? I saw the movie and it was alright but didn't see it as anything I want to watch as an entire series.anybody human wrote:Or maybe I just watched Caprica.

I don't know, just watched 2 hour the pilot/movie thing. Looks decent, I was digging it until she became a robot at the end. I'll check it out cos I dug Battlestar Galactica. Bits of philosophy in that show actually, hopefully same with Caprica, existence etc.
Re: Avatar - its a ripoff
I dug BSG too but really wasn't excited about the prequel concept. I think the movie pretty much covered everything I needed to know. I think the series is just going to be a bunch of unrelated drama I'm not interested in.anybody human wrote:I don't know, just watched 2 hour the pilot/movie thing. BSG was stellar the first 2 seasons. The rest, especially the finale, was nothing short of pure abomination.

I thought Season 3 of BSG was great, though the finale left me a little cold until I watched it a couple times. I didn't like the pilot of Caprica at all, which kind of surprised me. Felt like some wierd teeny bopper sci-fi channel show. I thought The Plan was kind of lame too, the same thigns we'd already seen that really didn't tell us all that much new. I hope they don't take a great show like BSG and exploit it to death.
Oh well, back to Mass Effect 2....

I hated 95% of the plot and I was blown away by the special effects. The shear number of arguments I have gotten into with friends and family over this movie were far more interesting than any of it's non-graphical content.
I thought the aliens looked wack. They almost all had the same body in group scenes and it was unconvincing.
The backgrounds were lush and incredible!
The political content was a major buzz-kill.
I love how Cameron keeps referring to himself as an artist. Like somehow it justifies a plot that is nothing other than appropriation. Or his overused characters strewn across nature like Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Gates, devoid of any credible presence. Total BS. Delusions of academic credibility to justify the unveiling of a movie not fit for intelligent audiences, but guaranteed to sell because of Hollywood cred? When a director that once let his movies speak for themselves starts calling himself an artist, this is a clear sign to me that there is going to be problems.
Art is not a polished-turd, viewable under 3D-lenses. Unless it smells like one too. I'd rather see Caddyshack with the same technology, in a drive-in. Technology does not make a fucking movie.
Now the backgrounds... alright- those were worth everything. Loved them. Made it worth watching a second time.

I'm too lazy at the moment to quote, but whoever was knocking the terminator can't front on the quality of that film at the time it came out - for sci-fi from 1984, it did a decent job.
Can't speak about avatar, haven't heard enough good about it to warrant wasting that much money at the theater (I'm an Imax snob, and if I'm going to see a movie like that, it's going to be at Imax, dammit).

It's fashionable these days to look for pseudo racial horse poop and then pretend that you are some kind of stand up intellectual that's not just another sheep. Here is a lil' clue for all those adopting such a fashionable trend.
it's you who are the sheep peeps.
take an absolutely breath taking beautiful ultra simple animated form of entertainment and pretend it's a racial statement espousing white superiority. takes brains... eh, not so much though.

Yes, but I bet that the Navi males had ENORMOUS cocks compared to the white men. So you see, the dullwitted pseudo racial intellectual mumbo jumbo has at least some merit.

Wow, way to create a common enemy we can all rally against. Would you like us to beat you with history books or would you like to give the reading corner a whirl?zee verkawound wrote:You know if you wanna go on about how unoriginal or predictably simple Avatar's story line is, fine. About the only thing we can all agree on is that Avatar is commentary on white man's conquest of other people and their land. Even James Cameron is rolling up a newspaper to pummel you with on this one.

Let's review:
Level 1
Humans are shitty money grubbing assholes. Regardless of colour. Cool. That's established.
Level 2
99% of the humans in this movie are evil assholes. Cool.
Level 3
Of the evil assholes, all the top characters/command are white. Really white. Like, can't dance/can't jump white. Cracker banjo playin inbred white.
Level 4
The only evil asshole that has a change of heart turns out to be hispanic.
Level 5
Most, if not all, of the Navi were played by actors of every race except caucasian.
Did I miss anything?

What's also hilarious in the movie are the scenes where the military dudes are getting themselves all worked up and ready go to kick some NATIVE ass. The Colonel is working them into a frenzy and whenever he uses the word 'savages' everyone cheers and gets an evil look/sneer on their faces.
Except when they show the black soldiers. They have that same look but their eyes kinda look around cautiously as if to say "Damn, thank GOD for these blue savages. As long as these cracker mofos focus on them, they WON'T be focusing on us.

I still say it's a lot of nonsense over nothing. There was a definite anti corporate greed at the expense of the environment thing going, but all this "white messiah" stuff is just horse shit. Was the story of Pocahontas a brain washing racist affair? Avatar is almost parallel with that story. The funny thing here is there are just about as many people of color defending Avatar on Youtube as there are "angry black men" calling it racist. shits hilarious and if anyone takes offense to Avatar, it's those morons who are the tards. Just plain "my cootchie hurts" clowns.
Incidentally Loop man, you are a lot funnier when you are not trying to be funny. Taking it in the poop shoot for a beautiful broad is a major fail.

Re: Avatar - its a ripoff
I knew when the movie made another gazillion dollars at the box office the cool Ableton kiddies wouldn't like it lol. He made Aliens anyway, so any negative comments are irrelevant as the man is plainly a genius. Don't be dissing Aliens, or I will make some angry uncommercial shit music on your asses
