I'm waiting for a launchpad/lemur sort of app for the ipad.. can't be hard

I was personally hoping for a true MAC that one could _make_ stuff instead of just controlling other stuff ... Moving and programming freely with the ipad using it's long life battery while traveling etc etc ... in that sense it's a bummer as you have to lug around all the other stuff you intend to control with it ..

but it's a big ipod touch, so one can use it for all that strange stuff people use an ipod touch for. and if you're from the hiphop scene, you can even put it into your pocket

happily, not relying on apple, i have a nice 12" tablet since long time, with which i can work in live without any hazzle.

the apple world is very restricted, and doesn't really fit the music scene. which is why i question all the time, why everyone is so fixed on it.

is there someway you could access the live screen from another computer in your house via remote desktop, now that would be awesome. i have always wanted to write music while in bed using just my fingers

I played out last night and every artist on the bill, including me, was running Mac. One artist was controlling live via TouchOSC on his iPhone using springback virtual joystick control for FX control.It was bloody awesome.

How can you say it doens't fi the music scene? That has to be ajoke, albeit not a very funny one.

I haven't yet caught the Dell Inspiron user group out rocking the streets of London, although I am sure they are hiding somewhere...

This new tablet will transform control over Live, watch and see.

Apple made a consumer product. I can get why everybody isn't happy that it doesn't run OSX, but then again.. Running Osx on a 1Ghz computer would suck hard anyway.
On a forum where most of the people earn or try to earn their living by others consuming their music, videos, knowledge etc.. Not a lot of people are looking at the big picture.
I'm not even sure if Mac users appreciate the fact that many more app developers are coming to this platform and gather knowledge that they can transfer to making Osx apps.

Not to mention half of the Asian technology market probably gearing up to copy this thing even more than they tried to copy the ipod. And the other companies that were holding back to wait and see what Apple came up with should come out of the woodworks too.

You're really just wasting your energy. Fine, you don't like macs. We get it.
There are other products out there that suit your needs better. Awesome. But are your needs my needs?
I personally always saw this tablet as the milestone before we see jet-packs / single-person-choppers.. Guess what NASA just announced

well, it's a joke that musicians buy into this believing it to be the way to go. but if all you want to chose from is a phone, an ipod, an ipad, and one of 3 sizes of laptops, and think that's fine. then be it. i prefer to have a much higher variety of choises, which can be much more tailored down to my needs.

for one thing, i'm on stage with a 12" tablet. it's smaller than the smallest macbook, still performs the same. it is, too, much more flexible (like, having all ipad features) in tablet mode when composing, or just surfing or what ever.

when i would be on tour, chance would be high we would like to have some powerful bigger laptops for light/video stuff. there are options up to 20" laptops existing. none from apple. yeah, one can take a desktop with you, but that's less reliable and more work (you'd need an ups, too, to have it continue work in case of a short power outage).

for my arty friend who likes to do paintings in photoshop, and photoediting, the apple screens don't give you the adobe colour range, and are not adjustable with measurement tools. both dell and hp laptops deliver.

if i just want a portable traktor-just-in-case-backup-mini-laptop, i can get a tiny netbook, and it will work just fine for djing.

all i mean is, the world without apple is much bigger, has much more variety, and much more tailored down to each ones needs options. with apple, the world is very restricted.

i don't want a glossy screen? no chance.
i want a device with 24h battery life? no chance.
>17" laptop? no chance.
<13" laptop? no chance.
different connector support needed? no chance.
tiny netbook? no chance.
a phone with background jobs running? no chance.

there are much more 'no chance' if all you buy is apple, than there is 'no chance' if you buy outside of apple.

oh, and they still cost more.

btw, apple always IS an option for me to get. it so far never was the best one. if it would be, i would have one.

others only consider apple, not even looking if better options are out there. they lose.

because apple threads are always fun. so much ooh and ahh and wow and i love that, and "i don't need that" if you notice something they lack just pure fun

your needs are a big ipod touch then, that sucks in batterylife compared to other e-readers (which is what it gets sold for), has no option to run your own app if it's not approved by them (and made available for everyone, not really fun for corporations f.e.), and has serious usability nightmares (just wait till they praise the new feature: multitasking. it will be absolutely awesome, right the day after 'nobody needs that anyways' depending on jobs mood, that is)

my main reason to post into such threads is, to maybe open some eyes beyond the tiny closed apple world. tons of great devices are out there for anyone, and people in here are mostly just "apple everywhere". like, if, no life ever crashed on an apple.. including live 8

i say they are not the best suited thing. which stays true. and i'm allowed to post in this thread, it's a thread about music makes discussing the ipad (and not liking it really, check the op).

Hey Russ, I am one of the Dell Inspiron generation My Dell Inspiron actually rocked and my XPS stacks up well too

The reason Dave why Apple has a strong foothold in pro audio is because Microsoft have conceded it to Apple years ago. Microsoft gear everything to the Office and Gaming communities. They don't give a crap about Pro Audio, it's a tiny market.

Apple have written core audio, core MIDI and AU plugin infrastructure into the heart of the o/s at a low level with OSX and revised it with most major updates.

In Windows, we have Steinberg to thank for providing ASIO and VST, because Microsoft's offerings (DX and WDM) are just very poor and aimed only at the gaming community where low latency and pro audio performance is not required. Thankfully ASIO and VST are good protocols which pretty much match Apple's equivalent protocols performance wise.

Microsoft's MIDI protocols were last updated with Windows 98, and there are 2 competing standards MME and DirectMIDI. They did introduce WaveRT with Vista, which is better than DX but not as good as ASIO and not supported by many vendors.

What does this mean. Well yes, you pay more for Apple, it might not do Halo 4 as well as a PC, but it is easy to set up and has much fewer driver issues. It's not flashy but 'it just works'. Most professional studios run Mac, and Protools HD in pro studios is about 75-25 in favour of Mac. High end interfaces such as Metric Halo, Apogee etc are only available on Mac. So in terms of pro recording Mac is a very good platform with very few performance differential issues.

This is not to say a PC doesn't have some advantages or can't be set up to be a great system, but it requires a bit more effort and a bit more careful selection of devices to make sure driver issues and performance are not a problem.

As good as an operating system windows 7 might be, it still has MIDI from 1998 and it's native audio system is lacking compared to OSX. However much dislike people have for Steinberg, they cannot deny that without ASIO and VST, windows would not be acceptable as a pro recording medium at all.
